here's the thing.
I haven't really decided what I want to do yet, but I do know that it is in the math/sciences.

Nwern: I would major in statistics and I got into MMSS
WUSTL: I would obviously go into pre-med
Berkeley: I got into the College of Chemistry, which is known for being extremely cut throat xx
and i would have to pay OOS tution

I don't want to pigeon hole myself, but I also don't want to regret my decision
please help? :)

If only you’re planning on majoring in social sciences or languages, any of the three schools would provide that excellently. But for science, engineering, computer science and business, it’s clear that Berkeley is the force to reckon with. NU and WUSL aren’t known for their science programs. They are excellent on liberal arts programs, however.

Come to Berkeley and enjoy the Norcal experience. It would be nothing like it. Plus the Norcal weather is friendly – moderate the whole year round.

Actually, I’m more curious as to why you picked the majors for the schools you discussed. And did Northwestern offer you a scholarship? Cause otherwise, you’d be dropping $50,000 a year there too.

Hi, I’m having a similar dilemma, except I’m interested in the humanities and social sciences. I’m considering both Northwestern and Berkeley. I wasn’t able to get financial aid from either of them, and I’m a spring admit for Berkeley. Now I’m not sure if that will make a difference in my college experience, but I’m seriously considering both schools very equally. I live in California so I wouldn’t have to pay OOS.

Actually, NU’s chemistry is ranked in the top-10. I think at least 5 undergrads from that department have won prestigious scholarships like Cambridge Gates in the past 3 years.

Well, if you find chemistry not great for you, you can switch out to another major * as long as * you maintain pretty good grades. Definitely you can switch to a math/science major in L&S for instance, again if you do well.

I do think our departments have an edge in this case. We definitely have good weather as well. The question is, what you want, which remains pretty unclear from your post. Our math and science departments are all very good.

If you’re looking for prestige, Northwestern and Berkeley would be the choice. WUSTL is very prestigious (don’t get me wrong; WUSTL>Berkeley in terms of rankings) but the typical person out there gets that mixed up with University of Washington. To be honest, I would choose Northwestern if you can handle the cold. I may a bit biased, but I love NU because of its strong Alumni connections and liberal arts program. However, I think both WUSTL and Northwestern offer you the academics and necessary social life. But, if you’re not a big liberal arts person, then Berkeley would be the best option. Whichever path you choose will lead you to success. All 3 institutions are wonderful. No doubt. I think it really depends what you’re looking for. If you’re seeking a more flexible college career, NU and WUSTL would be better than Berkeley though.
I actually wanted to apply to WUSTL (the school sent me apps constantly) but was too lazy to do so since I already had piles of essays to finish.
Have you visited the campuses? NorCal’s weather is lovely (but can’t beat SoCal’s). However, Berkeley is extremely liberal. No joke. Hopefully, you don’t mind the throng of liberal kids there. I think you should take a look at each before deciding.

Sam Lee, yes, for undergrad science education, Berkeley’s lead would over NU isn’t really a big deal. Both Cal and NU are pretty strong across many academic disciplines. :)

Therefore, in choosing between two top caliber schools such as Cal and NU, things like fit, weather, student culture and cost are the deciding factors.
