Berkeley vs. Rice

I got accepted to Berkeley for Engineering and wait-listed to Rice. My interests are along the lines of Engineering, Math, Economics.

I know Berkeley's got one of the best engineering programs in the nation, but Rice seems like the better school all around (smaller class size, more access to professors). Even though I am only wait-listed there, I would rather go to Rice as of now.

Can somebody who is going or graduated from Berkeley or Rice tell me about their experiences? Which one is better? Or Which school puts me in the better spot for career and grad school?

Really appreciate it!!!

There is zero problem having access to professors at Cal. Almost all the professors complain that they sit during office hours each week with plenty of unused time.

haha. Are there a lot of research opportunities at Berkeley?

I am curious about this also.

Yes, there are a lot of research opportunities at Berkeley. I’m a second year majoring in math and economics who has already gotten involved in research with an economics professor. I’m learning a tremendous amount and getting exposure to the cutting edge in the field. And it was not too hard to get that position. Many of my engineering friends are involved with research too.

rider is right: It is easy to get to know the professors. Just go to office hours. Most students don’t.
