Ok.. so i have like, 2 days to decide where i want to go pretty much! I applied and got into engineering at both of these schools, but i'm not sure if thats REALLY what i want to do, as people in high school tend not to get much exposure to that field other than what they read about it. But i like math and science and despise english/history.. so ya lol. The problem is i also enjoy foreign lanuages (chinese/japanese) a lot, too. Berkeley seems like if i do engineering there i will not be able to pursue foreign language interests... but Tufts encourages people to take both languages and engineering. Berkeley has a top engineering school, while Tufts is not that well known for it. Berkeley is also much closer (i live in socal).. and a lot of people i know are going there. any advice? lol :)

Berkeley has top foreign language departments as well...If you're resourceful, you can find time to cram in a 5 unit foreign language class in your engineering schedule.

Tufts engineering is pretty weak. If you want to major in engineering, this shouldn't even be a question, choose Berkeley.

Berkeley has amazing classes in Japanese and Chinese. I don't think those kinds of differences should factor in. Also, it's apparently fairly easy to transfer out of engineering into other fields.

What I would look at is how you felt when visiting these campuses. I'd go with the one that felt right. I am a huge fan of Berkeley, but Tufts is a great school. Getting away from California could be a good thing too, though I'm not sure (not sure either way) I'd want to be in Medford, MA.

i'd feel comfortable at either campus... theres one problem about berkeley's east asian languages.. i read on another post that due to budget cuts courses in that department will be restricted to L&S people only, until they get more funding >.<... maybethis isn't true, but it seemed legitimate... i could always study abroad.. i hope lol

Berkeley has some of the best East Asian Language and Culture programs in the country.

Lots of Asian people at UCB so there must be a lot of Asian Languages.

Take what you read on an internet message board with a grain of salt...I would call Berkeley and ask if this is true...I doubt Berkeley is going to cut class enrollment...it makes no sense.

BERKELEY.
definetly.
I love Tufts, but I feel like you would be disappointed if you have never been there compared with Berkeley

i tried to get in contact with them today by email.. but i'm just gonna call tomorrow morning cuz the deadline is getting closer! lol

Columbia it is not just because of "lots of Asian People" it is also proximity to markets in Asia, so there was more of an attempt by West Coast schools to have East Asian Language programs.

so.. you would think that even though i'm not sure of whether or not i want to do engineering.. berkeley would still be a good choice? I'm just slightly worried about the size impeding my chances to switch majors over time and still finish in 4 years if i choose to do so...

More Asians to take these language programs as well. More Asians to practice these languages with. I think that was my point.

eh.. i found that for real they arent letting anyone outside of L&S take Chinese/Japanese/Korean courses >.<... UC Berkeley Japanese Program
That's really putting me off... but ionno if it should be enough to stop me from going to berkeley

^ Go to Tufts then..."F" that!

Wow that is horrible. Yeah I guess Tufts it is. I love Berkeley but that is unacceptable geez! What is going on over there UBCCHEM???

"F" that haha typical Berkeley student response....of course I have heard much worse at the football games with Stanford haha

Berkeley needs a sugar daddy/mama philanthropist to make a $10 billion gift.

Oh yes...usually directed at Cal's QBs Ayoob and Longshore...

I've never thought I will hear that from UCB. Not the "F" part. But

Go to Tufts

LOL!
