berkeley vs ucla for premed!!!

how do they compare for pre-med?

any comments would be appreciated... =]

I’m doing premed and I have a choice between the two schools.

I’ve chosen UCLA becauseeee…
-It has a hospital right on campus so you can easily volunteer there.
-It’s less cutthroat than Berkeley.
-Much better location than Berkeley (in my opinion).

WOO!

UCLA and UC Berkss are both amazing pre-med schools. Don’t totally die in them though… best of luck!

They’re both pretty competitive. It’s hard to say which is more competitive.

Is it equally competitive? I want to know too

Well UCLA has a greater number of premeds than Berkeley if that says anything.

I’d say they’re pretty equal academically. What it comes down to is which environment you’ll feel more comfortable in while you’re studying like mad!

Just statistically speaking, Cal has a much higher % of med school applicants get accepted every year than LA.

Don’t buy the whole “Cal is too competitive” thing. It’s perpetuated by a few people who are struggling and want to blame the school/other students for it. I had a friend choose LA for premed a couple of years ago because she was afraid of Cal, but she’s doing really poorly at LA, so the decision really didn’t help her out.

I really wanted to ask the same question , to cutthroat in UCLA or Berkeley as a pre-med student. I got into UCLA as neurosci and into UCB as neurobio, I don’t really know what the differences are but they’re both bio major.

BUT I heard UCLA has better bio programs and offers more researches and hospital volunteer opportunity than UCB?

Do a search on the bio programs. I only know that Cal is great in a lot of fields, but I don’t know about LA. And DO NOT make a college decision based on “what you hear.” Look at the hard, cold facts.

Don’t forget about UCSF!

But isnt UCSF a med school? Anyways, does anyone know which campus UCLA or Cal has better bio programs, esp. neurobio/neurosci majors.

wtiger, you were not admitted neurobio (an MCB emphasis), you were admitted undeclared. Also, the major you choose to follow does not affect you for medical school. You can get into medical school with any major, so as a premed the place at which your major is better is not really of much value.

Also the idea that UCLA has better biology programs is false; at least for graduate school ([Search - Biological Sciences - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/bio/search)) we beat them in biology.

Both UCLA and Cal have good pre-med programs, but if I were you, I would pick UCLA over Cal. The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (located right on UCLA’s campus) is considered the best hospital in the west (ranked by US News and World Report) and the 3rd best in the nation. Because UCLA allows undergraduate research since freshman year, you can actually go in and research in one of the nation’s best hospital with professional doctors and medical experts.
