Berkeley vs. UCLA vs. USC

I'm from NY and just recently got into all three of these schools. I'm going to be visiting each school soon but I'd like to know any opinions on what are some of the pros/cons of each. By the way I applied undecided if that matters to all 3 if that matters. By the way be as biased as you want I posted this thread on all three college subforums.

Berkeley: urban environment, awesome academics (all-around), great city and environment, GO BEARS!

UCLA: in Westwood (kinda like Palo Alto), fairly good academics, good for you if you like the rich, gated community and socal.

USC (U$C): not in the best neighborhood, socal environment (pollution, car needed, etc.), fair academics (but good film and business), ridiculously expensive.

but honestly, don’t listen to CC posters. you’re visiting, make your own opinions. all of this is very subjective.

If I had the decision to make, it would be USC–no questions asked. The southern california lifestyle, weather, community, and the school itself, is just a better fit for me. Berkeley is not for everyone, just keep that in mind.

These threads may help you out:

Prestige- Berkeley
Social- UCLA/USC
Cost- Not USC haha (least bang for buck)

The rest is your preference. Weather, environment, people, etc.

go wherever is cheaper.

im in the same exact boat as u! im from ny and deciding between these 3 schools. what part of ny are you from?

im trying to visit as well but its hard being so far away =/

I’m from Long Island, I’m leaving for my trip on April 4 I think and I’m visiting UCLA then USC then Berkeley.

“Cost- Not USC haha (least bang for buck)”

Remember, the OP is from New York, meaning he’s paying OOS tuition for UCLA and berk. Both of those schools are basically the same price as USC for out of staters.

The price also depends on whether or not the OP qualifies for needbased aid, as if he does USC will most likely be cheaper than the others.

You should go with the best fit for you and your major. I live in California. UC’s in terrible financial straits. Lots of media coverage right now. Lots of cutbacks forecast for all UC’s. Something to definitely consider. Class size for undergrads huge at UC’s. USC is a great campus (disagree with pollution comments–same as UCLA). Don’t need a car. Great car/taxi services; great security; fantastic spirit on campus. Absolutely everyone rides bikes, as campus is flat. Libraries open until late (UCLA talking of closing one and closing another at 5 PM). But again, it’s a personal decision. You should definitely visit each before making a decision. Virtual tours not anywhere near the real thing for any of them.

im from long island too! are you doing the oos ucla overnight on the 5th & 6th?

^nope californication I’m just doing the college day on the 6th I believe so I guess I’ll see you there lol. I think I’m going to the USC explore session on April 8th also and I’ll probably visit Berkeley the 10th or 11th.

dammm u guys got into all 3? and ur outta staters!! i only got into UCB so far, rejected from UCLA…i seriously dont know how that works…becuz i didnt think id get into EITHER! buuut im kinda wondering which one i shud choose between USC and UCB too! i’ve always wanted to go to USC, but now that i got into UCB, i’m all mixed up. havent received a letter from usc though and even i get rejected, im almost positive my appeal would work. or i could transfer from UCB to USC.

USC’s appeal success rate is <6%, so don’t count on it.

someone sent me their girlfriends essay and she had done very little compared to what i have…but i guess i wouldnt care that much if it didn’t happen. i could always transfer.

visit both, learn about both (not the stereotypes that circulate from people who haven’t been to either). one will definitely appeal to you.

i think im just doing a tour at usc the 5th then the overnight the 5th & 6th at ucla

my parents think usc is in a bad area and too much of a party school theyd rather me go to ucla lol

Here are some youtube tours of the three campuses
