I actually posted this thread on the UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) forum, and most people said that I should go to UIUC. So I figured I'd like to see what kind of input the Berkeley forum has to offer me :]

I got into both UIUC Honors and UC Berkeley (undergrad) for Electrical/Computer Engineering,
and I need some help deciding as to where I should go.

In terms of ranking, Berkeley is higher up as a school and on the engineering leaderboard,
but UIUC is ranked 2nd in ECE, while Berkeley is 4th, albeit a small difference.
However, that flips for their respective graduate programs,
Berkeley, Stanford, and MIT being tied for 1st and UIUC 4th.

Secondly, UIUC costs about 10 grand less a year (45,000 vs 53,000)
AND I got a 12,000 per year scholarship at UIUC which brings it down to 33,000 grand a year
- 20,000 cheaper than Berkeley!

Lastly, I got automatic placement in UIUC's honor's program (still waiting on iEFX though).

Under normal circumstances, I would choose Berkeley over UIUC in a heartbeat,
but considering the cost and the honors program has made this harder for me than I had expected!

i am i the same case here. uiuc hasnt given me any money yet, but since i am instate, i will have to pay 31k. for berkeley, i would have to pay 26k (or 30k, im a little confused about the 4k of work study). i have no idea where i should go. i plan on living in illinois after graduation, so i dont know what i should do. do scouts come from illinois to california to find students?

It is a very tough decision and be sure to analyze and consult it very much before chosing, but if you were admitted in both (and UIUC honors beforehand) you will probably excel in any of them. Basically it comes down to the money, what are your parents economical situation. What do your parents tell you? If money is definetely not a problem and it won’t affect you much (meaning you stand in great economical ground) I’d say to go with Berkeley, but that is just my opinion.

I had the similar choice for civil engineering, but no honors at UIUC or money so I chose Berkeley. My brother goes to UIUC in civil and it is a tremendous school.

Oh man, I’m in the same situation except slightly less money from Illinois. I’m thinking Berkeley will be much tougher and it’ll have a more stressful environment in general but the weather is much better. More specifically, for ECE, silicon valley definitely is where the action is right by Berkeley.
