Berkeley (with regents) vs "Just below the IVYs"?

OK--so for an in state resident going to Berkeley with a regents--cost is maybe 25K tops total--vs a bunch of "just below IVYs"--CMU, Vanderbilt, Rice--with very limited or no aid so cost is maybe 60K total----would like your thoughts? Major is chem pre-med. (regents is nice to have for Cal)

Cal. Excellent in the sciences and save money for Med school.

Berkley no question

lol i’m in a similar situation except the other way around. Berkeley gave me no money and will cost 50 k to attend. Vanderbilt gave me 40 k/yr and will cost 20 k to attend. I’m leaning towards Berkeley though. I’m not rich (EFC is 24 k/yr), but I think Berkeley is a better school

Berkeley is I think the academic and reputation first choice (sorry Vandy…) but I have been told that it is easier to get into med school from say Vandy vs Cal?

Well, i’m not sure about med school exactly BUT InPathWays - Discover latest hot new trending topic, insights, analysis; (This is for top business, med, and Law)

Vandy isn’t even a feeder to top med…Rice is good, Berkeley is decent, and CMU is 51, barely off the list.

^ That study is quite a few years old by now. It has been widely criticized on CC for (among other things) bias in the set of target schools it considers.

The most important factors in med school admission are your GPA and MCAT numbers, followed by personal characteristics expressed in the interview. I’ve never seen any good evidence that where you go to college makes a significant difference after controlling for these factors. And I don’t think any of these schools is so much better than the others, for undergraduate education, that it deserves a $30K+ price premium.

Med school is frightfully expensive. More so than college (with little or no financial aid available). Save your money.
