berkeley's FinalDistance

my friend showed me this nifty class/schedule generator. for the people who havent seen it, here's the link.

<a href="http://finaldistance.berkeley.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://finaldistance.berkeley.edu/</a></p>

someone was talking about going up (well "up" for me cuz i'm in LA) a week earlier to berkeley for welcome week? i am definitely gonna be there. moving and adjusting can be quite draining as it is, so i figure i'll give myself that week to get over home sickness, any pre-upper division anxiety, and get some rest because semesters are quite long.

i still dont have a place to live... =</p>

Any political science majors wanna be my friend?

scratch that, why am i limiting myself!?

any cal bears wanna be my friend. rawr. i dont bite.

sorry.. i get giddy when i'm super tired. =D

I'll be your friend, cja1130! haha, I agree with you about going to Cal a week early. I particularly wanna get any sense of homesickness out of my system before school actually starts. And from what I know their are crazy parties going down during welcome week as people have no real obligations and whatnot yet. =)

Great link, cja!

Yeah, cardinal. We should host a CC transfer party.

"Great link, cja!

Haha, most definitely Gabe. Which CalSo will you be attending? Also, random question but are you the same Gabe as the one with the other username?

finaldistance is a great tool. The creator was awarded a scholarship from Berkeley for building something "simple and of great use to the students."

Cardinal, I'm sure this has been asked, but are you a Stanford fan?

Have any people from CollegeConfidential met personally yet? I'm not even a regular, so I'm kinda lost. it's like the new myspace jk - but with more substance

haha, Cja1130. Yeah I originally wanted to go to Stanford--it was my super dream school. But now since I'm going to Berkeley I have come to detest them elitists ahaha...nah jk...I still have mad respect for all the Stanford people, I know they are as bright as can be...

Oh I haven't met anyone from CC I haven't met before but I most definitely have gotten several friends to join the CC realm...I'm a walking CC advertisment heh. =)

We should definitely meet up during welcome week.

"We should definitely meet up during welcome week."

Agreed. We owe it to ourselves. Many of us have history together--dating as far back as the "UC Decision Dates" thread...ahah.

hahah ahah

I told two friends about CollegeConfidential, one who just finished community college with me and is going to Haas and another prospective transfer for 2007. You guys scared the bujeesus out of them!! She read around and saw your stats, how strong your ECs were (not you but the people posting at the time), and what was being talked about during March and April and she basically compared herself to the people on the forum and it made her more worried. She already had the added pressure because she only applied to two schools... but seeing the CC kids panic made her feel crappier.

The prospective Haas transfer just got scared away. I dont think she'll be returning.... ever.

talk about no mercy

Yeah, I will defintely be homesick. I will probably spend the first couple days crying..then off to the parties...

I'm going June 22.

I'm glad I'm going on the 8th because the classes I want are filling up pretty fast.

You must want some lower div classes? I don't think it's that much of a problem for upper div classes...

Well, really, the only class I'm worried about is cog sci C100. It's cross-listed with some psych class, and open seating is full for both. Since I'm neither a psych nor a cog sci major, I may be out of luck.

I might be going to berkeley.

I have a hard time deciding between $30000 Berkeley bio and my FREE state school. Anyone want to help?

Berkeley: Super good school, very famous, well respected. When i visited, I could see myself there. I liked the atmosphere and the respect it has for both tradition and liberalism as well as the Nobel prize parking spots.
Cons: Expensive expensive expensive. Though my parents are pretty well-off, its still a lot of money to be spending on undergrad.
-Competition @ Berkeley seems to be more fierce. I was looking for scholarships and there doesn't seem to be that many. I've also heard from people who found it really hard to graduate. I know for a fact that I won't be a big fish in a small pond.
-I don't know waht to do wtih my life and what to do wtih a bio degree from Berkeley.
-I have to retake the whole Organic Chemistry sequence @ Berkeley.
State school:
Pros: I have a full scholarship. I pay for living on campus but its pretty cheap.
-I'm guaranteed into their guaranteed pre-professional program. I'm guaranteed into DENTAL school. Its not exactly my childhood dream or what I picutred myself doing growing up, but its comfortable, pays well.
I'm set for life.
-Big fish in a small pond. I can graduate in 1 year instead of 2 because I can overload on credits and not worry too much. I KNOW for a fact I'll be able to graduate.
-Jobs and research opportunities are plentiful because students here are lazy.
Cons:
-Its impossible to find a boyfriend here because everyone seems to be retarded.
-I don't exactly have a "niche" here. I'm used to talking about libertarian politics ever since junior high (I went to a selective magnet school) and my absolute best friend goes to stanford.
-My grades have dropped slightly to a 3.64. I'm scared my BA would be worthless in case anything hapepnd.
-My parents are overprotective and Asian. I'm afraid if I stay in Chicago (where they live), I'll find myself living at home after I graduate and forever and ever. I don't have much freedom even though i live in the dorms. (they call me every night tomake sure I'm not going out and then they threaten to not pay for housing).

Help?

It sounds like you have more problems to work out, problems that won't necessarily be fixed by switching schools. I wouldn't switch schools just because of the boyfriend or parental issue. It seems like you have more behind staying at your current school, but really, with all these pros and cons outlined, you should take the time to reflect on it and make a personal decision.
