us too. Looking forward to it.
@PattIL I sent you a PM
Did any of your kids get the electives they wanted? My D just got her schedule and didn’t get songwriting at all…
Wondering if any of you have received your child’s grades for the 2017 Five Summer Performance Program?
Nope nothing yet. I did find out that unless they got a B or higher in ALL of the graded classes there would be no transferable college credit given.
Was wondering about that too! Nothing yet!
still nothing which adds to our overall frustration with Berklee and their lack of organization.
Still nothing here!
Tell them to check their on-line portal. That’s how regular students get their grades.
I remind you of the fact that the summer program is really not comparable to attending Berklee as a regular student. Berklee does operate on a very slow timetable, I’ll give you that and at times disorganized, but it’s a great school and I think you will find that most students and parents love it.
For sure @rockinmomab. Berklee is an awesome school and I certainly don’t mean to suggest otherwise at all. I know so many kids that go and absolutely love it there. The summer program has been very disorganized and you can speak better to regular college in that regard.
I did just email the registrar as was suggested awhile back from someone in summer programs. I checked D’s portal but I don’t think they have the same kind of portal as regular Berklee students do so I didn’t see anything there. I’ll post if I get any updates from the registrar.
I just got this from the registrars office
Five week transcripts and certificates for this year will be mailed out early next week.
anyone get transcripts yet? Nothing here…
Nope but we did get some other kid’s certificate of completion!
@akapiratequeen Lots of kids in the 5 week got the wrong certificate! Seriously…the level of disorganization is staggering. No transcripts yet either despite being told by the registrar they were mailed out over 2 weeks ago.
In general, though, don’t judge a school for the quality of the music experience, based on administrative disorganization.
Oh I absolutely agree @compmom. Like on Star Trek: I’m a doctor, not an accountant!
SpartanDrew did not judge the quality of the music experience at Berklee (see post #30). SpartanDrew is judging the administrative disorganization. I think compmom put words in SpartanDrew’s mouth.
OK so since this seems to be a recurring issue/commentary let me clarify a few things and maybe we can finally put this to rest.
First off, Berklee is an outstanding college of music! If I have ever made any comments (likely in frustration with administrative disorganization) that have suggested otherwise, please let me say that for the record. D had done a summer program in 2016 and absolutely loved it and couldn’t wait to go back for the 5 week program. It was a priority for her and she even got a job during the school year to help pay the costs. Berklee had been her #1 top choice for college so the experience was a surprise to us all.
There were a lot of pluses and minuses in the 5 week program for her. I will say however that while many summer programs are not an accurate reflection of what actual college life is like at that particular institution, we were told otherwise by the faculty and administration of Berklee regarding the 5 week program. “It’s like Berklee on steroids” was a direct quote from D’s musicianship professor. “This is a great sampling of what being a student is actually like” was a quote from another regular faculty member. All of the classes D took were accelerated versions of the same classes that students take during a semester, and supposedly college credit is to be given for 4 of them.
D loved the area Berklee is in and loves Boston. She had a couple of wonderful professors that she loved and one or two not so much, as you’d expect in any college situation anywhere. Overall though she felt that while she learned a lot of music theory, she didn’t get very much time to learn or practice vocally. I DO actually think that is a reflection of the summer program and not regular Berklee life. She felt there were so many vocalists that she was lost in the shuffle. Again, a function of the size of the program for her which is something she felt was just too big and she is now looking at smaller schools. I think depending on your instrument you could have a very different experience here. I know a couple of musicians that have either graduated from Berklee or are current students and LOVE IT. But not every school is for every kid as we all know.
Finally, I have been very reticent to pull Berklee off of D’s list because it is already a very short list and she has now only been to 2 of the schools on it. I have tried gently suggesting a few times that maybe she reconsider Berklee and apply and audition again for more scholarship money. She has thought for a moment or two but every time comes back with a resounding “NO, it’s not for me”. She may not know exactly what she wants yet but she does seem to know what she doesn’t want and I have to respect that. This is her journey, I’m just along for the ride (and the wallet LOL).
I think the 5 week program is a great program for any kid considering Berklee. While D didn’t love the experience, many many other students did. I think if you have a kid that does the 5 week and they loved it, it would be a great way to get a feel for life there.
To that point, my son adored the five week but has also decided Berklee may not be for him undergrad. He wants more of a campus experience and isn’t sure he wants to do performance. He is now saying maybe grad school. Again, no reflection, just good information.
