Berklee College of Music...How are students notified?

Hi:

My DS applied early action to Berklee and was told that he would know his fate by 1/31/11. Is this information provided online somewhere or does Berklee only notify snail mail?

Thanks!

K.

Last year it was email. At midnight EST when the clock struck Jan. 31 (so 9pm for PST). It seemed a few people didn’t get theirs right away, though, and had to wait an extra day or so.

Thanks so much! We’ll be there at midnight…hoping!
Another question. How soon are accepted students alerted about scholarship opportunities? Do you know of any students who gained awards and the average amount? It is one thing to get in and another to afford the tuition.

Scholarship yes/no/amount notifications came about a week or two later. It seemed to be a broad range, and I’m sorry, I don’t know the average amount. I would imagine Berklee would tell you that, though. Or you might find some clues on the Berklee Facebook page if you look around Feb. of last year.

My daughter was a transfer to start this January, so she found out at 12:01am 9/15, and then scholarship info came within 12 hours, so perhaps with folks that applied for Fall 2011 they have to wait longer for scholarship feedback as there is more people that applied.

Good luck to you! (P.S. Daughter is there now and LOVING it.)

yeah jan 31…i applied early action as well. eagerly awaiting
not sure about scholarship info

You should hear on the 31st via email. They follow up with a nice package that included a lot of information including housing info a few days later via snail mail. 2 years ago when S applied they send the scholarship notifications about a week later via email also, again followed up by a letter.
If the policy is still in place (and I think it is) Berklee will hold your place with a deposit (500 dollars as I recall). If you do not decide to attend and notify them prior to May 1 they will refund the deposit. That is a no brainer since almost every school requires you to make a decision by then anyway.

Thanks for your replies! Unfortunately, IF our DS gets accepted without a scholarship of some sort, he can’t go. He will be crushed, but I simply cannot put him or us in that much debt. I don’t know how other parents swing it. It’s hard when you want to give your kid the thing he/she dreams of most and can’t.

kcreative, when my D applied as a senior in HS, she did a standard jazz audition with a CD for the music. She was accepted, but did not get a scholarship, and because of that, convinced herself that she should pursue a traditional academic path. After 1 year on that university path (no music major) she realized that she was off course, and came home that Spring with a passion to make a change. She re-started her private lessons (piano and voice), starting doing gigs, and just went all out. By the time she auditioned as a transfer student, she was so ready to show them what she had. She accompanied herself doing her arrangement of a jazz standard and wasn’t even nervous waiting for her turn. When she got admitted the 2nd time, but with a scholarship, it was very exciting. So, even if your S doesn’t get a scholarship, he can still pursure his dream, but he may have to temporarily modify the path to get there.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all of your waiting on Jan. 31st!

well even if you don’t get a scholarship you may as well wait and see what FAFSA comes out to and what options the school has; work study, grants etc. i am also hoping, obviously, for a large scholarship

jazzguitarmom, technically they are required to “hold your place” until May 1 whether you give them the refundable deposit or not. BUT as we learned last year (thanks to you, I think!), giving that refundable deposit means you will receive an early (earlier than the regular acceptance date kids) dorm application and can also hold a spot in the dorms with a $300 non-refundable deposit. We did both, although my son ultimately chose another school. It was worth the $300 to have a dorm space at such a dorm-limited school.

Anybody else apply to Berklee for performance (drums)??

My D applied for Fall 2011 early action (voice) and she was in the “extra early” group that heard Christmas Eve. An email came on the same day that a package arrived by UPS so she heard by email first. In the package was a folder with the acceptance letter and a scholarship letter.

LGSMom:

Did she audition before Christmas? Was she accepted to the university before the new year or to both the university and music school? Thanks.

kcreative, Berklee is not a university – it’s just a “music school.” There is only one acceptance to get. As you may have read in the acceptances thread, about a 100 or so early action applicants were lucky to get an unexpected “extra early” acceptance prior to Jan. 31. Berklee did not do this last year.

Perhaps you were thinking of Belmont?

Yes. I was. I did not know that some Berklee students were notified at the end of December. I wonder what this means for the others who were not notified in terms of potential scholarships. I guess all will be revealed shortly.

i wondered and asked the same thing and not all of the students who got early early acceptance got scholarships…one week though!!!

A friend of mine called Berklee last week and asked about the early early decisions, and they denied this.

It was probably a student who answered the phone. We know the parents of two kids who got them (we know the kids, too) and several others are posted in the admissions thread here.

For whatever it’s worth, one of my daugher’s classmates, a Jazz Guitarist, was accepted in this early group and offered the same scholarship as my daughter. They have a long way to go on admissions so no reason to panic yet!
