Berklee College of music

She is at the 150 Mass Ave. Dormitory. On the block next to her, they are just about to tear down a building to put up a new 16-story building with room for 370 dorm rooms, a cafeteria, classrooms, etc. It is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013. When it is completed, it will probably be easier to get a dorm room.

My twins have their EA Berklee applications in, auditions in Dec in Boston. S already has some scholarship after attending Guitar Sessions this summer. We are hoping for enough for both to attend. I am also hoping they will hear from Admissions before the end of January. Fingers crossed!!

Berklee has big construction plans on both sides of Mass Ave, they have spent the last few years buying real estate contrary to the national trend. It will be very interesting to see the changes.

Musictwins: Good luck on both of your children’s upcoming auditions. Double the stress!

I just got accepted, but I already committed to another school. I’m wondering if it’s worth committing here instead though
I’d be doing music business.

nspire25, what is the other scool?

@nspire25: did you receive an email today? I’m still waiting to hear back from them. Any word on scholarships?

Our son just got the email. He got accepted for spring 2013 and wait listed for fall 2012.

After reading this thread, we hope he is able to secure housing. We saw the new dorms being built when we visited for the tour but they won’t be ready until fall 2013.

We live on the west coast and would feel better about him living in the dorms for his first time on his own. Any other parents dealing with this issue in Boston for the first time?

@wrensong
We have a friend who’s son was accepted off the waitlist last year in May or June. I think there was an online “roommate” board where you can post for a roommate to get off campus housing. He did that and is 2 blocks from the school and very happy.

Also, our tour guide mentioned that there was quite a bit of off campus housing within the area around the school. It seems expensive but when you consider the cost of the Berklee meal plan, you can actually save quite a bit by living off campus.

Besides that - many that have reserved housing EA, will drop off over the next month due to choosing other schools. Get your deposit in asap- housing will follow - get that filled out/sent in right away too.

@squiggles1118 thanks for the great tips. Can we submit the housing app BEFORE we know about his status for fall? We would be willing to do that. But the off campus option sounds better after hearing of your friend’s son’s experience. Two blocks from campus would be perfect.

FxBeast, did you ever hear from Berklee? My son has still not received an email regarding his acceptance status. Something is amiss, sad to say. I am the father and am tempted to write the admissions office myself, letting them know that open/honest/timely communication is really important in cases like this. We do not want to wait around (assuming he’s been waitlisted) so long that we lose out on housing at other schools.

Is anyone else still waiting for an email from Berklee? I’d like to get some sense of how big this problem is and what others might be thinking if they are in this situation.

Cheers and congrats to those who have been accepted!

remo1024: I have not heard back from Berklee yet. I called them yesterday and got the answering machine telling me their normal office hours etc
we were discussing this issue at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1313697-berklee-college-music-admission-fall-2012-a.html</a> and a few people got their response yesterday, but I’m still waiting. I would not hesitate to get in touch with the admissions office. Unfortunately that seems impossible to do this weekend, and I have to make some decisions today

@wrensong - Berklee requires you put down your deposit before they will send the housing info. From what I understand, if the student does not matriculate, the admissions deposit ($500) is refunded but the housing deposit ($300) is not.

If you are serious about looking at off campus housing - start digging now for info. Call Berklee and ask about that roommate board (or try google) or ask if they have an agent that helps the kids find apartments. I would get as much info as possible at this point so you are ready to move ahead if needed.

Sorry for those of you still waiting.

Wrensong, congrats on the accept for your S
my D transferred into Berklee in the Spring and it was easier than she thought to start in January. As a transfer, she did not get housing even as an option (she would have been 4th semester, so she wasn’t a freshman). Talk to Berklee to see if you can deposit now for Spring, 2013 housing, and then transfer that housing deposit to Fall, 2012, if your S gets off the waitlist. As a freshman, your S will at least get a higher priority in getting a dorm, but as you know it’s not a done deal to get a dorm slot.

Hello this is an old post but you seem so knowledgeable so I’ll take a chance. My daughter’s Berklee audition is coming up and she’s pretty worried. The reason being is that she really has no theory training. Her voice is good and strong and her song is well prepared. Do you think she’ll be disqualified because of her lack of sight reading experience? Thanks so much.

@mumkee, I notice you’ve asked the same question on several old threads. You may get more appropriate responses if you start a new thread with your specific question.

I don’t think it will “disqualify” her but they do have a rating system and one of the components is sight-reading. Does she have a private teacher? Is she not able to read music at all? If she at least understands music notation, she can practice sight-reading.
