Besides the UCs, what colleges should I apply for?

Can you guys give me some recommendations to other colleges I should apply to besides the UCs? I live in California so preferably ones in my state, but I also want to know what are some ideal colleges to apply to out of state.

4.0 weighted gpa
3.83 UC GPA
3.57 unweighted

SAT score = 2240
SAT II = 740 in World hist, 730 in US hist

Worked for 2 years at a tutoring center
Played violin for 8 years
Earned a taekwondo black belt when I was 12
Did a biology internship at a state college over the summer

I didn't do much sports or clubs in high school though...
I joined a business club for a year but didn't make it past state.
There was a volunteering club that I was a part for 2 years though

Apply to some California States because your GPA is too low. You will probably be rejected by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, and UCI.

Intended major(s)?

Cost constraints?

I intend to go into health or political science.
My parents are willing to pay anything if I get into a really good college out of state but they don’t really want to pay if I go to a normal one out of state.
If I go to a college that is better than UCD or UCSD they’ll probably be willing to pay anything, in or out of state

I don’t think money is a big issue but I feel that really expensive private schools would be out of the picture unless they were really good.

By “health”, do you mean pre-med (which you can do with political science or almost any other major)?

If pre-med, would your parents put the money saved at a cheaper school toward the expensive medical school costs, if you get into a medical school?

Is there anything specific you want in a school that may not be present at many UCs or CSUs?

They would if it was a good medical school. If it was average, probably they wouldn’t take the risk. Money is not an issue if it’s a good school.
I will probably major in political science since I am part of the competition civics team at my school and feel more comfortable with it.

I’m not looking for anything specific really all I want is to get to a good college and talk to interesting people.

If you’re open to smaller schools, Occidental could be a possibility. Located in LA, with excellent academics and undergraduate opportunities.

You have a shot at Emory which is an excellent school, particularly for the social sciences. It’s located in suburban Atlanta, a city not terribly different than LA. California is the second most represented state at the school, so you certainly wouldn’t be the only Westerner.

I don’t think you have a great chance at UCSD simply because your GPA is much lower than their average. If your parents are willing to pay for a school on par, if not better than SD, look into the University of Washington which is one of the best state schools in the West. Every major airport in CA has direct flights to Seattle, so getting there should not be an issue.

If you are good enough to get into medical school then you will be fine at any medical school. All US medical schools are very good. It doesn’t matter that much which you go to. To talk about taking a risk that way doesn’t make any sense. You might want to do some reading in the med school forums area to get some idea what you are talking about.
