Best academic school for golf?

Is there a private school (day or boarding) which is known for having the best golf program, or which has a history of graduating a lot of top high school golfers who go on to matriculate to top college programs/teams?

For clarity, I am not talking about schools like an IMG Academy or a private school whose emphasis is sports training and merely offers academic/boarding options.

Which boarding schools have a golf course on campus (Lawrenceville and Hotchkiss come to mind) or close enough that the students can play/practice easily? Are there any schools with superior indoor/outdoor practice facilities?

Hello @daddycaddy…there are a couple of schools @Hilton Head - one that is a golf academy, the other a day school with excellent golf access in the area and a serious team. Both girls/boys programs that prepare for college and many have gone onto professional play. Feel free to PM about this. Kids from all over the world come to SC for golf training. You can always speak to one of the golf academy schools just to find out where their students may be coming from.

Decide on your goals, needs, and priorities. Do you want a golf-focused school that offers college prep? Do you want a day school with a nationally ranked team? Do you want a traditional boarding school that has a strong golf program? How many days off a year does your golfer need “off” four tournaments? What type of access do you need for training (eg public v private courses)? Do you already work with a private swing coach or a team?

Do you seek year-round golf and a “traditional” prep school setting? If you are in the Southwest and can swing a day school, try Brophy prep (Scottsdale/Phoenix). High in the national rankings. We have friends whose son attends, so you can PM me. If you are in Texas, look at Highland Park high school (public) or St Marks (private day). If you need year-round golf in the SE/Florida region, you should look at Bolles and Saint Andrew’s in Florida (both offer boarding/day options). The Benjamin School in Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens area has an excellent golf team and (hey, not for nothing) Jack sends his grandkids there. All have excellent teams, college prep academics, are close to world-class golf, and offer flexible class schedules for training or tournament commitments. We know kids who have attended high school @ Saint SImons Island and the Rivers Academy (Atlanta area) so they can have a “normal” high school experience and play golf year round. You may also want to seek out one of the California schools. Sorry - can’t help you out for CA high schools, but can share information @ collegiate play out there.

For NE schools look at the NESCAC standings and the (my personal favorite) the Yale rosters. You can see the players and where they attended high school. Many (if not most) attended public high schools. But if you seek a private BS, you may want to check out Hotchkiss, Canterbury, Berkshire, Choate, NMH, Taft & Deerfield. There are several boarding school golf teams, but if you seek a serious golf program then you must narrow your search.

  • Hotchkiss has its own beautiful 9 hole course (some tee boxes are right outside the doors of buildings). I think they also will be using Silo Ridge golf club for some play, as will Canterbury. I played in a tournament with a PGA pro who was a Canterbury alum. Taft also has a golf course next door (Waterbury golf club). FWIW, they are having a good season. Deerfield has a very impressive team with serious golfers (one is a nationally ranked junior player). Plus, Deerfield has a new indoor golf simulator training facility. For a traditional day school, check out Kingswood Oxford @ Hartford area.

You can check out Boarding School review. As I noted above, it may be useful for you to check out the rosters of the college teams you hope to play for and see where those students attended high school. What was most helpful to us was visiting schools, coaches, and players. We also followed players rankings and tournament results outside of school. Do talk with golf coaches NOW before school ends, or go to some tournaments. We did some BS visits in the Spring before the application season - because up in NE golf is a spring sport and the coaches are sometimes busy with other teams, as well as teaching, during the fall when you are applying.

If I could do it all over again and $$ was no object, I would probably move to Hawaii and enroll in the
Iolani School ?!

For schools in CA, look at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach. Huge (and winning) golf program in a day / boarding strong academic environment.

Yes @Hopeful0304 - you are correct! Stevenson is practically on the Pebble Beach golf course - also on the road up to Spyglass. The US Open will be right there in June. FWIW, golf at schools in the NE is a very short season. It may be more affordable to attend a school in a region where there are plenty of public courses for year round play.

@daddycaddy if you are interesting in looking at Stevenson in more depth, we have a current freshman (not a golfer) and I would be happy to answer any academic questions for you. Golf is indeed a year round sport here!
