Best Airport?

I am currently making reservations for DD to attend the admit weekend. Can anyone tell me which airport is best to get to Stanford? SJC or SFO? Is OAK too far? She will not be be renting a car and will have to rely on public transportation and/or shuttles.

Off the top of my head, San Jose is the closest, I believe...

Transport to campus is quicker and more easily available from either SFO or SJC. Public transport from Oakland is cumbersome and lengthy, but do-able.

You'll note that the attached from Stanford Conference services doesn't even seem to mention the Oakland Airport!

2boysima, Thanks! The web site that you indicated has really good information.

i believe SJC is closest. by a long shot. Then is SFO, then Oakland... but like 2boysima said, transportation from OAK is terrible.

It's not hard to get from SFO to campus, although you do have to take several different modes of transportation. From the airport, you take BART to the Millbrae station (one stop away), transfer to Caltrain, and take that to the Palo Alto stop, where you can catch a Marguerite shuttle that'll take you wherever you're going. I've never flown into SJC, so I don't know how close or convenient that is, but I think you can take a shuttle bus from the airport to a Caltrain station.

My advice would just be to go with whichever airport is cheaper, flight-wise.

From SJC:

Take the free VTA Airport Flyer 10 (a bus) from the terminal to the Santa Clara Caltrain station.
Take the Caltrain north (towards San Francisco) and get off at either California Avenue or Palo Alto (better). (about $3.75)
Take the free Marguerite shuttle to campus; look here http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteSched.shtml for maps and schedules.

This is really quite easy to do. I've used public transportation for both SJC and SFO, and SJC is far easier and faster. The SJC adventure will take about an hour and a half (including random waiting time). I can't remember how long it took me to get to SFO, but all of the public transportation bits have online schedules, so you can figure it out.

Shuttling from SJC to campus takes about 20 minutes. Shuttling from SFO to campus is probably not that much more... 25? SuperShuttle sucks for going from an airport to another location, though. Consider using a less-known company; pay a little more, but you have a better chance of being picked up on time!

Flying into Oakland...
Take the AirBart bus from the airport to the BART station in Oakland... $2 exact change
Take the blue line Millbrae/SFO train all the way to Millbrae ($3 something)..
transfer to the caltrain and take it to Palo Alto ($4.75)...
walk down palm drive, or take the marguerite (free)
and you're there!

it's really simple. don't be intimidated by public transportation. i have yet to take a supershuttle.

Thank you to all who responded! ajimmykid, how long would you say it would take to get to Stanford using the routing that you indicated?

it mostly depends on when you get to the millbrae/caltrain station because on weekends (when you'll likely fly in) the train comes every hour (HH:24 if you're going south to stanford, HH:45 if you're going north (i think)). so if you get to the station right in time... it should take about 1.5-2 hrs. for me, it's usually 2 -2.5 hours. i like to relax.
