Best ( and worst! ) food at BS

For fun, please post your opinion of the food at your school, and why you like or dislike it!

Well, since you address this query directly to me I'll give it a shot:

All BS food today is great! Salad bars, multiple choices, soda, juices, great snack bars.

Why, in my day we got crap and we d*#m well liked it! Elephant Scabs, Mystery Meat, stale corn bread and Jungle Juice. We were convinced that some of the food was actually made from dirt. If you complained, you were taken outside and beaten with a stick spiked with barbed wire. Chronic whiners were smashed in the face during chapel with baseball spikes .

You kids today have it soft, soft, soft...

Seriously, my husband swears the scrambled eggs at his school were green....yes, green; as in Green Eggs and Ham. He did not like them Sam I Am.

ewwwwwwwwwwww,
haha.
when i went to revist,
the food looked pretty good,
as in normal,
but i was to nervous to eat anything!

but there were so many options,
like pasta and salad bars,
and hot food,
and sanwich bars,
and fruit,
pretty much everything!

Food for lunch at Andover on Spring visit day was very tasty. Huge number of options, including lots for vegetarians.

Compared to most public schools, boarding school food is amazing.
Compared to most home cooking, it's still school food.

NMH has great food and there is ALWAYS something available - a sandwich bar open, or yogurt/cereal available, pretty much any time of the day. Not the norm at most schools.

The kids we talked to say breakfast is pretty much the best meal of the day. My son confirmed that with his overnight visit at Avon Old Farms, but also said lunch and dinner were fine. Although he was warned about the broccoli soup.....by a teacher.... :)

Yes, NMH food is excellent. The chef there seems to really enjoy his job and catering to kids. They have a stir-fry bar once a week with every raw veggie and sauce you can think of and options of chicken, steak, pork, shrimp, or tofu. There is always a pasta and pizza bar as well as a vegetarian option. In addition there are one or two hot entree options. There is also a full soup, salad, and sandwich bar along with a pannini maker. The baked goods and desserts are home-made in their own bakery. They even ship out the cream from their cows and have their ice-cream made at a gourmet shop in Greenfield, MA. As Linda noted, the dining hall is always open for "grazing" with fruits, cereals, bagels, etc. available.

On special occasions, they go all out. On Valentine's day, for example, they had prime rib and shrimp scampi. At semi's and extra-special occasions they have ice sculptures, chocolate fountains, fruit sculptures, and a chef carving the steamship round.

Much better than home...

You are right, Linda. While I said "much better than home", I meant the breadth of selection. My kids still like "home-cooking" better.

How do the kids keep from getting FAT with all those buffets etc.?

i would guess that kids keep from getting fat becuase everyone is always one the move between classes and sports and such...

Lots of sports, running across big campuses to get from building to building, up and down many flights of stairs to your dorm room...

That was my guess as I didn't see any fat kids - the girls don't do extreme dieting or anything like that do they?

Wherever you have type A, driven kids, they'll be some issues with eating disorders. Schools are knowledgeable about it and do education and keep a look out. I've heard it can be an issue but child did not witness any issues during her first year.

Exeter omelets are AMAZING. They're even worth getting up early on Sundays for because the good omelet guy leaves at like, 10.

do they only have the omlets on sunday?

At NCSSM I hear the food is terrible. Like at public events held at the school, the school orders a caterer... and the actually students line up to take all the leftovers so they don't have to eat school food for a few days.

artsmart - Sundays and Wednesdays. This was really good for me because neither my best friend or I had class until 10am spring term : )

Great to hear the food has improved so much at NMH since the 70's!

Anybody know about Choate food?

Sadie....I am thinking lots of schools have improved since the 70's. My LAC had horrible food in 1978....chicken in a casket, mystery meat, etc. No options, just one choice, take it or leave it.
