i'm wondering if current students can give us some insight into certain halls that they loved or halls they heard were terrible.

If you want an apartment (which is more expensive, but larger, and allows for more roommates) then Hilltop apartments and Charter Oak apartments are pretty good. In terms of residence halls though, South is probably the best, along with Hilltop Suites. Shippee is a good residence hall as well (it is currently the freshman honors dorm, but will not be next year. Next year, Buckley will be the new freshman honors dorm, and Buckley sucks.) Charter Oak Suites are not bad either. Alumni is pretty good, and McMahon dorms are not bad either (McMahon has a dining hall right in the building. Also, it's got a "Global House" floor for anybody who's interested, it's mostly international students. You need to apply for Global House), and Towers is also okay. East is decent (though East's dining hall is awful). East also has same-sex dorms if you want that. North campus residence halls are not very good, and West is probably the worst.

South has the best dining hall, hands down (and the only one that has trays now). Towers dining hall is usually good, but it can be hit or miss. Towers has Halal and Kosher food stations. Northwest dining hall (Northwest is the freshman-only dorm) is pretty good and is located close to North Campus, which also has its own dining hall. North dining hall is okay, not bad and not great. McMahon dining hall is located right in the McMahon building, but it's pretty bad. East campus has Whitney dining hall, which is all vegetarian and stuff (I think); it's also the worst dining hall in my opinion.

I bring up dining halls because, even though you have unlimited access to every dining hall as part of your meal plan, sometimes it's just more convenient to walk to the closest one. In that case, it might make a difference where you decide to live.

Thanks for the insight on the dorms/dining...

Can you elaborate why Buckley sucks? Considering the honors program and if the dorm is lousy I would consider other housing...

Buckley's rooms are average, but the location (all the way on the outskirts of campus) and dining hall are pretty bad. At least, it's located far away from most classes (unless you're an art/music student) and other residences and the center of campus, but pretty close to Subway, Store24, and Wings...
Anyway, a lot of people in Buckley and Shippee just go to the nearby South to eat anyway.

Personally, I think Shippee's a little too good for freshmen. Honors or not, freshmen should not get new, large double rooms with their own bathroom while many upperclassmen are forced to live in a traditional, much smaller double with the usual floor bathroom setup.

If you're an incoming freshman, you won't have the choice anyway so there's not much you can do about it.
