Best and worst professors and classes at nyu

So yea, just give some the low down on the best and worst professors at nyu, and bslest and worst classes, from your experiences. I've heard Stephen cohen has amazing classes. I've heard great things about anna mcdonald's writing classes, and bowmakers econ classes. I've heard horrid things about novikoff's classes. Oh, and apparently there's a super legit burlesque class?! Oh, and feel free to do any other nyu/NYC related best and worst. Oh, and before anyone says it, don't bring up financial aide, everyone knows it's bad, get over it.

Honestly, you probably won’t find too much information regarding post-college admissions.

Cohen and Lieberman are good.

I am very close with many of my professors from NYU. Although I think the university is overpriced, and the financial aid office (which advises things like paying tuition increases with credit cards to student supporting themselves) is far less concerned with your child’s financial future or safety than their quota (a sentiment shared by many of the professors off the books), literally a dozen or so professors were happy to write me a letter of recommendation for graduate school. My point is I am a good well-liked and hardworking student.

This said, there is one professor who I absolutely advise you not to take a class with if you are concerned with expanding your creative horizons or your GPA. This professor is Nilita Vachani. She is a very nice woman and an intellectual, but will almost definitely be counterintuitive to your future.

Nilita goes up to 30 minutes over each class, forcing her students to be late (and thus have their grades lowered in another class). Of course, she gives the “option” for students to leave only ten minutes over, but as her grading is all subjective (as there’s no tests), you can expect to be put in a catch-22 if you schedule any classes within a half hour of when Nilita’s class starts.

Another issue is if you want to maximize your grade, I would advise to ignore what you learned in Writing The Essay and in any CAS classes in her class. While those classes teach the importance of counterarguments and seeing the other side of the debate, Nilita prefers to have her opinions, even when substantiated only by her “feelings,” completely unchallenged. In your essays, it’s imperative you agree with EVERYTHING she has ever said, even if these statements offend your race, religion or political beliefs. It’s best to substantiate this with further evidence. Other professors at NYU love the furthering of intellectual debate, but Nilita as she is new does not have a similar sense of security.

Also, Nilita keeps her grading policy a mystery from students, but she deflates grades. Nilita will have an opinion made about your grade made up at the beginning of the semester, and there is little you can do to change it.

If you do take any course with her: Check your opinions and free thought at the door, complement her dress, do not schedule any classes within an hour of hers and memorize her opinions regardless of how unsubstantiated and egregious they may be to your personal belief system. I would strongly advise any students who are pro-Western philosophy or favor the western world to heavily consider another class.

I did not do “poorly” in the class, but if you are hoping to maximize your GPA, get a 4.0 and expand your mind, this is absolutely NOT the class for you. Much of my class complained about Nilita at some point during the year.

She is a skilled filmmaker, but this does not mean she is strong at teaching or at social skills, because she most definitely is not.

LMAO you put your proffesor on blast, lol i like you

It depends on which school you’re in. CAS, Stern, Tisch, Gallatin, LSP, Steinhardt . . . ?

I can tell you anything about the most common Stern profs and a few CAS as well (MAP classes, ugh).

Gabaix? 10char

“She is a very nice woman and an intellectual”

Sounds like a idiotic twit to me.

Anyone else have any experience with Nilita? As an incoming student, there aren’t too many classes available, and I thought the course description sounded interesting. But after that review…
