Hey guys!
I'm international, so finding an unbiased opinion about a school is pretty much impossible.
I'm trying to find some good architecture programs. Can you guys please write the manes of school that are known for their arch programs?
Thanks!

You need to go to the Architecture Major forum here on CC and read some current threads and use the Search function as this question is asked constantly. You also need to define what type (4 or 5 yr) of Arch program you are interested in. As far as colleges with Arch, a google of ‘architecture programs’ gets this as the first hit:

[NAAB: ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMS](http://www.naab.org/architecture_programs/)

cornell’s is #1, syracuse is also very strong. pratt in nyc, risd, usc, rpi, cooper union, penn state to name a few others.

As stated earlier, you will find more information in the architecture major section of CC.

I personally think that the ratings posted by UCLA Band Mom are confusing (it is a blend of undergraduate and graduate, and I don’t feel the methodology is really objective).

Design Intelligence’s rankings are specifically undergraduate focused. For 2010, they have
1.Cornell
2.Syracuse
3.Cal Poly SLO
4.Virginia Tech
5.University of Texas at Austin
6.Kansas State University
7.University of Oregon
7.Rhode Island School of Design
9.Rice
10.USC

These rankings are still subjective and often change from year to year. I would recommend the website ARCHcareers.org to help you with your search. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the advice! You have all been very helpful :]

I think Clemson’s program is among the top 20 for the DesignIntelligence ranking for graduate schools. However, I have friends who are architecture majors and they’ve been nothing but challenged (=staying in the studio till 5 AM every night to get projects done).

Take a look at this section of the Design Intelligence rankings hosted on Tulane’s website: http://architecture.tulane.edu/news/PDF/Design-Intelligence-1109b.pdf

And Cal Poly listed the following list from the Design Intelligence publication found here:

I think this is a much more useful than the Design Intelligence rankings since it is more objective in dealing with the different emphasis of the diverse programs out there.

I would add that as New Orleans continues to recover from Katrina, students at Tulane have had unique opportunities to see their designs actually get built. It is a wonderful, 5 year masters program that is on the rise.

I had just recently applied to architecture school and there’s a lot of factors you need to think about. Being from the north east I applied to many of the top schools and usually the best onces are the 5-year program because they’re usually NAAB approved.

Some of the 5-year programs around the north east that are amazing are:

Cornell University
Syracuse University
CUNY City College of New York
New York Institute of Technology
Roger Williams Univeristy
Carnegie Mellon University
Pratt Institute
Cooper Union (great school EXTREMELY hard to get in, they only except about 30 kids a year per program)

Most of these schools are portfolio required schools, so my advice is to have a kickass/well rounded portfolio. I am attending Syracuse in the fall for their architecture program and I’m excited!

I dont really take the rankings too seriously. According to some of these rankings, I passed up schools (ex: RISD, CMU…) way higher ranked than the school I decided on (Cooper Union). Rankings are good to see a list of schools but ultimately you have to make the decision according to what is best for you.

@Cooperunion2015: so you’re a senior now? Got accepted that early? Man, I’m only half done with my college apps. I planned to apply to Cooper Union, but I kinda got scared of the acceptance rate. And I have a bad GPA. And I heard their home test takes a long time too. I’m an international student so sending the home test and stuff will be really troublesome and I’m also taking AP 2D Design this year, that’ll make my workload almost impossible to handle.

@Cooperunion2015: I understand man. There are a lot of schools that are not on the top of the rankings but they’re really good too. But my parents are really into rankings and stuff and they’re the ones who are paying for my college tuition and fees. My parents think that going to top ranking schools will help you get jobs later. I guess that makes sense too. Well, right now I’m applying to Syracuse, Penn State, Rice, University of Waterloo, UT Austin, and Carnegie Mellon. Hope I get into all of them.

And the good thing about Cooper Union is that it’s FREE :)

If you need funding, then your best option would be the Cooper Union, though you will have to be among the best of the best of students. Other architecture schools are very unlikely to give an international student financial aid. If you don’t need funding, applying to a school that considers whether the student needs financial aid before making a decision on his/her application would boost your chances of admissions. Good luck.

Cooper Union is tuition free, which is great. But you still have to cover room, board, and other costs in a very expensive city.

the usual suspects: Harvad, MIT, Yale and Berkeley

You need to decide first whether you prefer a 5-year program or 4+2.
