From researching a bit it seems that Chase has the most convenient ATM and bank locations around U of R, however you have to pay $25 to open an account. It's not actually a big deal to pay it, but if there was any way to get around it that would be nice, whether by using a different bank or something.

If you go to a Chase branch in Rochester - one is in South Wedge, only a few minutes away - you can open an account with no charge. We did that. It was quicker too because the one on campus had a line and the other branches are empty. Chase is most convenient.

I didn’t have to pay to open the account when I opened it at the campus one, and having one on campus is so convenient it overrides the fact that there aren’t Chases convenient to my home location. There’s also Chase ATMs on campus so that there are no fees for pulling cash.

When D was a freshman, during orientation, they had an event with booths set up in the fieldhouse. Banks were there to help students sign up for accounts, etc.

Ok I’ll try opening an account on or near campus. Thanks!

Chase is the most convenient. Also, because my S was from out of the country, we went the day before orientation to clear stuff out of the mailroom that we had sent ahead. When we got to school, we found out that they didn’t mind doing his ID a day early, we also went to the Chase branch at school rather than wait for orientation day when the bank lines would be long. That was a few years ago, so I’m not sure if anything has changed. It’s worth a try maybe? They had the most awesome moving in day I’ve ever seen by the way.
