Best Baseball Player Ever

As far as all-time greats, Jeter isn't really near their level. Who knows though, he's still relatively young, maybe he'll have an 80 game hitting streak or something this year.

He'll be turning 31 soon. From now on we'll most likely be seeing a decline in talent and output from Jeter. He does have four rings though, which makes him a contender for the hall. Definitely not a first ballot haller, but he has a chance in the later ballots. If Mazeroski made the hof, so can Jeter.

I think ruth is overrated, if he played in todays times he would not do as well as he did.

Ruth would get destroyed in today's league. So would Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, and almost every other old time player. You take great players into context and the level of the league at that time. They performed above and beyond what was the norm back then, that's why they deserve to be recognized in context of their playing conditions. Doesn't take anything away from their greatness as ballplayers.

with the juiced up ball in todays games, past players would have an offensive hayday.

No way. Players these days not only have access to better facilties and resources, they are inherently better athletes, work harder and year-round, and face tougher competition just due to the rise in the number of baseball players in the world. Do you really think a 5'10", 170 pound outfielder like Willie Mays would be able to hit 660 home runs these days? Would Babe Ruth be able to steal 123 bags today? Would Walter Johnson be able to throw 300 strikeouts in a season today with a fastball that tops out at 89 mph? Would Hank Aaron still hit 755 homers at 6 foot and ~185 pounds? Could "Big Six" Christy Mathewson still dominate the same way he did in the past with his lazy 86 mph fastball? The answer to all of these questions: no way.

Again, this takes nothing away from the greatness of past baseball players. But don't fool yourself into thinking past greats could even compete in the MLB in this day and age.

maybe jeter isnt one of the greatest, but he really pulls through in the clutch and makes some amazing plays when they are neede (like the one against oakland with jeremy giambi, and the one where he flew into the stands) What do you guys think about a-rod? i think he is overrated. And talking about Ruth, he was great in his time. I don't think you can compare players who played in the past and how they would play today because the game has changed a lot.
