Hi,
Trying to encourage my senior to apply outside of California for college. He wishes to study Biochemistry, but is a b+ / A- student. SAT 1290, but that was his first sitting.
Thanks.

Mm, well some of the colleges that are good for biochem:
Johns Hopkins
MIT
Georgia Tech
I don’t know how plausible these are in terms of his grades/SAT, but those are some pretty good science colleges.
Thank you, but I think these are all out of his reach. He has a weighted 4 GPA and UW 3.44 with an SAT of 1350.
There are a lot of universities with good biochemistry programs at the undergraduate level, it’s a pretty common major. If you want to stay in the West, most of the large state schools have good biochemistry facilities, especially UW Seattle, CU Boulder and more recently, University of Utah.
For undergraduate programs, Montana State in Bozeman has a great chemistry/biochemistry program that routinely sends its graduates to top PhD programs. Whitman College is a LAC with a strong science curriculum.
Thank you! All your suggestions were on his radar except Utah and Montana. I will have him look into them.
