Best Books to read for A.P. Lit

With the exception of all these books

Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison**
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce**
Hamlet, Shakespeare*
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
The Turn of the Screw, Henry James**
Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad
King Lear, Shakespeare*
Paradise Lost, John Milton (Excerpts)
Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
1984, George Orwell
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley
The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka

What book should I read? I have to do an IRP (Independent Reading project) and I need to atleast pick three books. I LOVED James Joyce (I know, total weirdo, because everyone else hated it). I didn't really enjoy Invisible Man and we are reading Hamlet now, which is ok.

I enjoy mystery and politics and romance and a lot of epiphanies. :D

We do IRP in my AP Lit class too. The two books I’ve chosen so far are The Scarlet Letter and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. I enjoyed both

I wanted to do The Scarlet Letter too, but my teacher said she hated it and I was super scared to pick it. I was surprised that she actually wanted us to NOT read something.

@Tarahific But thank you for your recommendations!

The Goldfinch by Donna Tarrt (very long but is the epitome of what you described)
The Kite Runner
And the Mountains Echoed
Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Mar u kami
Julius Caesar by Shakespeare (my fave of his)

@overachiever The Scarlet Letter is beautiful, so I wouldn’t let anyone else’s opinion of it deter you if you really are interested. I would also suggest some works by Dickens (most notably A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations), Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, and any of the Shakespeare tragedies.

The Goldfinch is a good suggestion if you have time! Also The Secret History by the same author. If you like plays, check out Arcadia by Tom Stoppard.

I just thought I’d pop in to say that I just finished Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky and I LOVED IT! He also wrote Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamozov–all of which are classics and a thriller-ish vibe (except Notes, which is just a tragedy of sorts).
