Hey guys, I'm trying to come up with a list of books that I want to read over the summer... what are some of the best, most interesting books that you have ever read?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Things Fall Apart
Joy Luck Club
Flipped (<—not requiring English analytical skills, but such a cute book!)
anything by Malcolm Gladwell

1984 (you’ve probably already read it but in case you haven’t, you must)
Fablehaven series (Great books! Comparable to Harry Potter in suspense)
War and Peace- I have this. I read about 30 pages and stopped because I didn’t have time during the school year, but I may pick it up again this summer.

I second Malcolm Gladwell!
plus Jonathan safran foer, both Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud & Incredibly close…both amazing

Flipped is a good book. I may read it again actually.

^ Speaking of Malcolm Gladwell, how did everyone like Outliers. I was going to order it on amazon but I was reading a review and the book seemed all common sense stuff…like if you do something for 10,000 hours you are going to be good at it, that’s completely obvious, but if you do something for 9,999 it’s not exactly going to make a diff… So thoughts? Is it a recommended read?

Oh and to answer your question hellohelicopter: def A Tale of Two Cities! That is my favorite book…the use of language is beautiful. And The jungle is pretty good too; it is applicable today because it really brings up issues with the capitalist system. I was a libertarian before I read that, now I’m, well, not.

And great thread btw I was thinking of making something like this myself

Walden
Iliad + Odyssey
Leviathan
War and Peace

I thought Outliers was super interesting! Well, you can decide. He has excerpts of that book on his website.

I second this. These books really are amazing and near the quality of Harry Potter. Stephen King is my favorite author, but nothing is more satisfying than reading a great children-young adult fantasy imo.

Also, These books are on my list:
Book Thief
Anna Karenin
The Sound and the Fury
Pride and Prejudice
Grapes of Wrath (over and over and over again for Acadec )

Gladwell’s Tipping Point was also a fascinating read.

Anyways, a few of my favorites are

Looking Backwards: 2000-1887
Catch 22
Main Street

If you like sports:

Mike and Mike’s rules for Sports and Life - Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic
Is This a Great Game, or What? - Tim Kurkjian

IMHO, the chapter on the army general in Outliers is worth the book–or at least to pick it up at the library. The specific examples within the chapters are worthwhile to read, even if you think the overall message is “The more you do it, the better you’re gonna be.”

* 1984

The Picture of Dorian Gray

A Fine Balance *

wartssssss you should have been on ccislulz we didn’t even swear that much

Paradise Lost
Swann’s Way
The Decameron
The Sound and the Fury
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell; it’s far and away the best book I’ve read that was written in the last 20 years. (I am mostly a fantasy and science fiction type girl, though.)
The Picture of Dorian Gray; easy (or easier) classic that is interesting and pretty.
I second A Tale of Two Cities. Sydney Carton is the best.
All the King’s Men; I had been convinced that I didn’t like American literature before I read this. It does take a while to warm up (on the order of 300 pages) but it is beautiful writing and Oh My God I am in love. The second half of the book is the most awesome thing I’ve ever read. My jaw was literally dropping, often.
To Kill a Mockingbird; also fabulous American literature.

Lirazel- Got any suggestions for good fantasy/science fiction books? Those are my favorite too.

Thanks Julibee! Amazon thanks you! Just read those excerpts and ordered it!

Anyone read The Divine Comedy? If so, how is it?

I love The Catcher in the Rye, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Great Gatsby, The Prophet and Life of Pi. The Kite Runner is good, too.
