Which bs/md program out of the following would give the best prep for an aspiring path: case, psu/jmc, bu, rice/baylor, u of rochester, osu, nw, rpi/amc, and u of miami? I wanna make sure that the undergrad institution is very strong in the life sciences and that the med school offers plenty of elective time for path. A strong match list woudnt hurt either. Price doesn't mater.

P.S. Is it true that case is a primary-care oriented med school?

Path is a pretty non-competitive residency, far fewer US M4's rank a path spot than there are available positions. Most of the positions are matched to International medical grads. I'm pretty sure that if you are interested in doing pathology, you'll have a very good shot at getting into a path residency somewhere...but that's a really long ways off, even if you're thinking about an accelerated program.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you want to do path?

Why do i wanna do path?? Path is the most scientific specialty of medicine. In fact, if it paid a little more, i wouldve gone into biotech. I'm not really interested in seeing sick patients, they depress me. That's why i chose path-all the sweet science, no patients, and greatpay for dermpath and hemepath. Right now, i'm trying to find a program that focuses less on the clinical bedside junk and more on the basic sciences. After all, that's what's important for pathology.

fair enough. What you've said is all true.

Keep in mind that all med schools are going to have significant patient interaction, so you're going to have to deal with that. I mean your entire third year and most of you fourth (depending on electives) are going to be clinical rotations. You also have to still pass USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills, even if you're a pathologist.

Basic science is pretty much conserved in all US medical schools. If you want to look for research going on in the schools, that might be something to note or prominent pathological faculty. But alot of schools will have some top guy in the field. Honestly, there is no BS/MD program thats going to secure you a residency in pathology. You'll be fine going to any medical school. I know personally that at AMC, there is a very well known pathologist who alot of people go to shadow because he gives great recommendations and people have gotten pathological residencies in the best institutions. But I'm sure this can be said for a lot of medical schools.
