I'm so confused. :/ I can't choose which business school to go to because I hear different things, mostly about rankings. Does anyone HONESTLY know about this - Will I get the same education, opportunities, and job offers from Baylor University compared to UT Austin?

I only have like....two weeks to decide. I didn't get into UT Austin's business but COULD try to internal transfer. But I did get into Baylor's Business school. But then again UT austin is free for me because of a scholarship. Ugh. You can see why I'm having issues. :/ Any advice? I'm so lost. People keep throwing UT's rank in my face, but I don't know if I should take it seriously or not.

And how much does the school's prestige play in your ability to get jobs?

UT-Austin wins…easily. On top of the free ride you are getting, UT-Austin has a much better business school. Judging from your free ride, you should be smart enough to internally transfer into Mccombs. Prestige plays a substantial role in some business concentrations, but going to UT-Austin will offer your more opportunities than Baylor’s B-School. openskittles will have more to say.

@ ifailedcalculus: the name is openedskittles :)

@ moochi: UT’s business school is one of the top few programs in the nation in any ranking and you will likely still have better opportunities for a lot of top jobs in UT’s economics program than Baylor’s business program.

The education at UT will almost certainly be better. I know McCombs usually dominates all statewide and regional business school competitions and does very well at a lot of national ones as well. Opportunities to participate in competitions and organizations will probably be higher at UT, which also has partnerships with some of the best universities around the world for exchange programs and brings in huge names such as CEO’s of top companies to speak to students. The culmination of differences ultimately leads to more job opportunities for UT students.

The only kind of “different thing” about rankings that I can assume you are talking about is people who say rankings don’t make that big of a difference. However, several of the presentations I’ve seen from recruiters included the universities that they recruit from for business positions and (from Texas) the top companies always show UT and A&M and often Rice and SMU, but rarely Baylor. McCombs attracts recruiters from top investment banks, is one of the few schools where management consulting firms hire undergraduate students and it’s one of the few schools where being a marketing major isn’t associated with getting mediocre jobs.

That said, Baylor isn’t a bad university, and you will definitely have some above average opportunities, it’s just the shot at truly amazing ones that you will be missing out on. My best friend from high school who would have easily been accepted at McCombs decided to attend Baylor and later decided he wanted to major in business. I think I would feel some regret if I were in his situation, but he’s still happy with Baylor. I just really doubt he would have gone there had he known what he wanted to study from the start.

The thing that makes this entire decision truly a no-brainer is that you will be going to UT for FREE! I actually can not see why you are having “issues” at all, because this choice seems obvious to me. I would be leaning heavily toward UT even if it was full price.

rank doesnt mean everything, it will really come down to your experience. If UT isnt where you want to be theirs nothing wrong with going to Baylor. I would go to UT but getting that high GPA will be tough, if your confident you can get the 3.6 to internally transfer into Mccombs go for it.

I would flat out say go to UT, but since your not in Mccombs it wont be easy getting in/ definitely easier than an outside transfer but not easy
