Best Buy Scholarship for 2013

Seeing as there isn't a thread for the best buy competition for one thousand bucks, I'll start one. Anybody out there who is applying this year?

I have a couple questions about the competition. Do they publish your SAT scores? I'd rather not have that happen. And does it matter if you have a job? Or do they want more community service?

I just applied after I saw your post. Seemed pretty easy, only took twenty minutes to complete. Thanks for sharing!

I doubt they would publish your SAT scores, though.

Also, I have only had one job in my four years of high school, I think it will be okay. We’ll see though. Community service is always key though. The more, the merrier.

I’m applying! I think community service is definitely more important. If you don’t have community service, then I think they’ll expect you to have a job or something.

I applied for this scholarship. While I don’t have a job, I am involved in a lot of community theatre and am always busy. I have also done quite a bit of community service also. I would think that they’d just like to know that you are doing something other than sitting around - so job, activity, club, sports - would be a plus.

How many community service hours do you guys have?

I haven’t counted exactly yet, but I’m thinking close to 500 or 600.
Would being a non-paid lab assistant at a college be a job or community service? I was an intern pretty much. And i don’t think lab assisting is community service, because I only somewhat help one person.

Nevermind, it says paid…

I was right! I have around 550 hours.
Does anybody know how they are going to verify these community service hours? I had 11 of the 12 slots filled. I find it a bit unreasonable to think that they are going to have us go back to each of our advisors to sign off on our hours. I am not in contact with my advisor for one of my major community service projects anymore. I hope my principal or guidance counselor can just verify the hours…

EDIT: Make that two because he moved to the other side of the country…awkward…

They might ask you to verify if you move on to the next round. I only have about 100-200 though, but I also have kept a job for the past eight months, so it sorta balances out.

I applied to the Best Buy scholarship as well! Does anybody know the competition of this scholarship? Is it normally well known like the Dell or Bill Gates scholarships?

I don’t know how many people apply, but if they are giving out money to 1,100 people, they must be pretty generous.

I applied!
and yes they are very generous. <3 best buy
I probably don’t have the best community services but I’ll hope for the best.

Any news? Their website says by March 5th but I wasn’t sure if they sent anything out yet…

I was just going to ask that too. I have yet to get an email back either.

I haven’t gotten anything either.

My Son has not recieved anything yet. The website says tht it will come before March 5th… Anybody got anything yet??? I am starting to think he did not get it.

Just a quick update:
In 2007, they said they will notify BY Mid march, and everyone recieved emails on March 16th.

Last year, They said notified by March 7th, and they recieved acceptances on March 3-4th.

So they are always a bit early so I don’t think my son got to the next stage :(

I would think today would be the day to hear about provisional recipients…anyone get an email yet?

Nice to meet you all. Let’s see what happens!

No My son has not recieved anything yet. I am keeping an eye out for an email this entire day. If anyone gets notification can they please post so everyone knows that emails are sent out?

But as of right now, I doubt my son will recieve anything. I think its too late.
