Best Campus Gardens

I interned at a botanic garden over the summer and from a somewhat experienced angle I recomend The Conn College Arboritum. Its lovely.

Also Gettysburg College sits on a beautiful battlefield

Swarthmore College has a really spectacular gardens. Some of them are adjacent to the academic buildings but the building themselves are an attractive background.

[The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College](http://www.scottarboretum.org/)

Another vote for Furman

Warbler,if you have UK universities in mind,I would advise you to take either Oxford or cambridge. There are nicely maintained gardens in both universities.Swarthmore has to be more awesome than both Oxford and cambridge, but doesn’t have the prestige both have.I really do not know any US uni which is famed for its gardens, except for princeton perhaps.Goodluck.

Have to say, Cambridge have the edge over Oxford in case of gardens. Cambridge is filled with parks, anyway, but the college gardens in Cambridge are awesome, and often huuuge - generations of gardeners made them to perfection. But as Oxbridge do not have campuses, they’re spread all over the town (well, the majority is in the centre, obviously) - and mostly behind walls, so tourist barely see any of the gardens, with the exception of a few.

Anyway, UCLA’s campus and gardens are awesome!

The entire Swarthmore campus is a gorgeous arboretum. Actually, Swat is every bit as academically prestigious as Oxford, Cambridge, but being a small (1500 students), exlusively undergraduate, selective LAC, it doesn’t have the same celebrity to the average man-in-the -street (akin to Amherst, Williams, Pomona et al). Oxford does have an incredibly cool camous and town.

I knew people would say that about Chicago and Swarthmore, which is why I made this rule in the original post:

I made the rule because some people (as was noted above about Michigan) like to visit gardens or arboretums to get away from people and the hustle bustle of college life…small gardens around campus are scenic, to be sure, but they are often not terribly quiet or peaceful.

I’ve never thought about the different gardens at colleges but now that I’ve been able to see some of them I think they are so beautiful.

The Huntington Library botanical gardens are almost right across the street from CalTech.

Vanderbilt has Centennial Park with a Parthenon right next to campus:

Tulane has a very large Park across the street from the main entrance.

It is very large… dozens of acres.

The University of South Florida in Tampa has the best gardens–Busch Gardens is one mile from campus–free beer!

Case Western Reserve in Cleveland has beautiful gardens and green space, and a huge new bottanical garden structure, with thousands of species of plants, orchids, etc.

lizard–if you want to talk about beer, William & Mary is near a Busch Gardens as well. And so is Wash U in St. Louis!

Cleveland…I don’t think of CWRU as being a botanical hot spot, especially with winter lasting 6 months (or so it seems). But the University Circle area IS nice in the spring. Just before you go home in mid-May…

Smith College is absolutely beautiful…on top of the virtual park in the middle of campus, there are two gardens that I can think of.

The first is the official botanical garden. A bunch of pictures can be viewed here: [The Botanic Garden Photo Gallery, Lyman Conservatory](http://www.smith.edu/garden/Gallery/gallery1.html)

The second garden is actually the back yard of one of the housing facilities. Here are a few pics in full bloom:

… the [UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Gardens](http://www.japanesegarden.ucla.edu/html/video.html</a>), which is actually across Sunset Boulevard in Bel Air, on Bellagio Road. This is an eight-minute video. Need reservations…

Reiman Garden is actually the largest public garden in Iowa. It is fully owned by Iowa State University and is actually right past the archway entrance to main campus, close to the football stadium. It is 14 acres and is both indoor and outdoor.

It is a stunning garden with walkways and entryways. It employs 40 students a year, not counting those who work on it during classes and for research.

When we did our campus tour last year, my dd wanted to skip the side tour to the garden. Once we went she was really glad that we had. It is worth the trip.

Duke and Wake Forest are among the best.

Penn’s got some sick projects in the works

As a whole, this campus is like an old magnate’s ranch… maybe because it used to be!
