This may seem like a stupid question in a sense, but what is the best type of car (automobile) that one can buy to get to and from Cornell. I live in NYC, so a car really is unnecessary. What type of car do most people use to overcome the notorious winter Ithaca weather that doesn't sap up too much gas, yet is big enough to help me move in. Thanks.

I've seen a lot of Honda Accords and Civics on campus.

I never had a car at Cornell but I have lived in Upstate NY all my life and my parents will only buy Accords. Ours do very well in the winter.

yeah, im from NYC also and i have my permit but not my license (i drive sometimes at my country house but thats it). do you think it will be a problem that i dont know how to drive?

no, let the TCAT bus drivers do your driving for you :P

Having a car at school is certainly a wonderful luxury...it can be a pain in the butt. Parking is expensive and gas keeps getting more expensive.

I used the bus when I was desperate...but I had a generous friend who let me use her car when I needed it.

Best kind of car at Cornell is the kind that you park at home. This campus is not made for cars. Even the staff park their cars on the edge of campus and have TCAT bring them to where they want to go.

probably a crossover suv...good for snow with the 4 wheel drive and isnt as much of a gas guzzler has a big truck or hummer is

As much as I love cars (and my car), I just can't see myself bringing one to Cornell. The campus just doesn't seem car friendly at all, and I am totally not experienced in winter driving. I am going to depend totally on public transportation and car-pooling, something of a novelty for a Southern Californian.

However, if you had to bring a car, I'd try to get an SUV/crossover, but then again that's personal preference. I am going to miss driving my RR Classic! :(

Freshman aren't allowed to have cars but get free Tcat passes (I know freshman and first year grad students do but I don't know about transfers). I think it's about $600 to park a car on campus for a semester so I wouldn't bring one.

Since I'm one of the few people that comes from somewhere with worse winter weather than Ithaca I'd like to say that all you really need in a car is front and rear window defroster. So don't worry about the winter weather just learn how to drive in the weather, and don't drive when the weather is too bad.

All new incoming students get a free TCAT permit. A Cornell permit for the 08-09 year is $687.

And...unless this rule has changed in the last 2 years, I'm pretty sure freshman can have cars as I know plenty of people who had cars as freshmen.
