best catholic college for premed/ microbiology or biochemistry major?

Hi, i was hoping someone could help me, i am a bit conflicted: my parents are dead set on me going to a catholic college, but it has been my dream to go to upenn or dartmouth. i know i have the grades and scores for an ivy league, but my brother is currently attending villanova and so my parents are convinced that a catholic institution is the only place where i would be surrounded by "nice and moral people." they will be paying my tution and i should be happy that they are willing to pay for a private school without hesitation, but i know that uupenn and dartmouth have amazing resources for pre med students and plenty of university hospitals where i could volunteer. so my question is this: which catholic universities would be the best for me to apply to as a science major?

Georgetown has a hospital on campus and is a great nationally recognized school. BC also has access to hospitals, etc, in Boston, has rigorous preparation for premed, and is becoming much more prominent in the rankings. I’ve heard decent things about HC as well, but I don’t know much about it. ND is a very good school as well, but I can’t really imagine South Bend having a significant amount access to multiple hospitals. Those are pretty much the “top” Catholic schools in the US. There’s a pretty lengthy debate over here, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1152322-top-catholic-universities-colleges.html</a>, on which one is best.

thank you ortsac! i know georgetown has the human science program at NHS, do you know if that would be a good way to go as a pre med student?

Boston College comes to mind -

or Georgetown -
[Handbook - Pre-Medical Studies at Georgetown - Georgetown College](http://premed.georgetown.edu/prepare/)

You know, St. Louis University has a medical school. Would you consider St. Louis?

My favorite Catholic colleges are DePaul and Fordham.

Oh, I was so slow in finishing my message that Ortsac answered while I was composing it. We both thought BC and Georgetown. :)

not really, as i want to stay within a five hour radius of my home, which is new york, so i was looking for schools strictly on the east coast. thank you for the help! my only issue that still remains is that there are not many options, so i would probably be choosing from a few schools instead of having the chance to apply to many schools, such as the ivies.

university of notre dame would be good except for your wanting to be near home.

The Ivies are obviously great schools, but there are plenty of comparable institutions, and luckily some of them are Catholic. If you want East Coast Catholic, prepare for GT, BC, HC, or Fordham. I don’t know the answer to your question about the human science program, but I’m sure someone here, [Georgetown University - College Confidential](Georgetown University - College Confidential Forums), can help you.

I’d just add that BC also has the Tufts Early Assurance program, http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/premed/tufts.html</a>.</p>

College of the Holy Cross has an 87% acceptance rate for students getting into med school. The premed program is highly regarded.

[Health Professions](http://academics.holycross.edu/healthprofessions)

Along with what Ortsac has mentioned above, Holy Cross is also part of the Tufts Early Assurance Program.

<a href=“Homepage | Tufts University School of Medicine”>Homepage | Tufts University School of Medicine;

Holy Cross has one of the best pre-med programs and UMass Medical School is in the same city of Worcester. The Holy Cross medical alumni network includes a Nobel Prize Winner, one of the top doctors at the NIH, and medical school presidents.

wow this is all really helpful, thank you all so much for your help! i suppose it all boils down to where i get in/get financial aid and find is the best atmosphere for me

Boston obviously has some of the best hospitals in the world so I’d look for catholic schools around it. BC is the only one I know of.

Agree on Boston College.

Holy Cross is in Worcester which is 40 miles west of Boston. The University of Massachusetts Medical School is in Worcester.

Unotre dame, boston college, georgetown, depaul.

Well, as a Notre Dame freshman who’s a pre-med biochemistry major, I’d say Notre Dame (not that I’m biased or anything…:)).

But to be fair, I’ll give you an honest analysis: there ARE hospitals nearby, but certainly not the same caliber of those you’d find in a big city, like Boston (BC), DC (Georgetown), or Philadelphia (Nova). However, Notre Dame IS striving to become a big-name institution in research and science, so there are more and more research opportunities emerging. Also, the name carries a ton of weight, and Notre Dame is better in the sciences than Georgetown (another big-name school). And lastly, Notre Dame is the best university there ever was, is, or will be, and it’s sheer awesomeness at everything is impossible to emulate and will never be accomplished (again, not like I’m biased or anything…).

Oh, and one more thing:

GO IRISH!!!
