Yup, the title says it all. I am intending to major in Chemistry and as a prospective international student I'm also in dire need of help haha.

From what I've heard the Ivies aren't particularly strong in that area with the exception of Harvard and maybe (and only maybe) Cornell and Columbia.

Recommendations I've been given, on the other hand, include UC Berkeley, Stanford, Caltech, MIT, UCLA and so on.

So do tell me if I've missed out any and feel free to overturn any inaccurate information I've been exposed to. Oh, and can someone please tell me how much the admission criteria of a college tells us about how good it is. An example, and probably the best I can give is that of Berkeley and Stanford (and in fact many other elite colleges). From what I've seen Berkeley is a much easier college to get into (relatively) yet it's programs rival (or even are better than) that of other more prestigious colleges. Can anyone explain that?

^that doesn't mean OOS students don't go to Berkeley, especially for chemistry....ofcourse they're a minority and its extremely difficult to get admitted but i have a feeling berkeley will be admitting more international and OOS students in the next couple of years.....as they did this year

Nah. Actually I feel pretty good that we can go toe to toe with NU as far as faculty quality goes in many areas.
Now handle those Orangemen. Our local picker said NU should win this one. Do you live in close enough proximity to catch a few games? If so, have a grilled dog at Mustard's for me. Love that place.

Berkeley's the only university that has "The College of Chemistry". Only two departments reside within the college, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
This makes for a smaller, more intimate environment while still giving you access to the resources of a large research university.

Hard to say. Even though those schools you listed are the best in Chem for graduate rankings, it may not be so for undergrad. This is because there's no rankings that exists for undergraduate programs in regards to specific fields with the exception of engineering and business. This may mean that top schools for a specific major may be outshined. For example, Berkeley is ranked #2 in mathematics and yet has a less rigorous math curriculum than Caltech( ranked #7). You can see this by comparing the textbooks used by those schools; For calculus, Berkeley uses Stewart while Caltech uses Apostol, a book thats far more rigorous; looking at the degree requirements; and comparing the research opportunities and requirements between the schools. This is just an example. I don't know much about chemistry, but I wouldn't be surprised if its similar.
