Best college for Asians? :)

Hi :)
I'm a Thai and my mom is a citizen in the states. So she really wants me to study there.

What I'm afraid of is the culture. I know everybody would be nice n friendly if I open myself up n approach them :)
but I'm scared that the cultural differences would be really difficult for me to overcome, coming from a conservative Asian family.

I'm not an Asian American tho I attended an American kindergarten (Hahaha) so I'm really not in synch with the American culture

Are there any univs/colleges where people don't mind being friends with a conservative Asian? Any where where I'll b able to fit in?
Ps. Im not nerdy or quiet n I love making new friends :)

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Most of the more selective/competitive schools…especially the ones who offer sought after science/engineering/pre-professional programs (don’t mean to stereotype!) are very well represented by Asian students. If you’re open and outgoing and willing to, maybe not assimilate…but integrate some new American ideals in to your life (and share some of your own!!) you will do great! Good luck!!

Does your mom live in the US? If so, which state?

What state does she want you to go to school in?

Are you a US citizen? If not, then you’ll be an int’l for admission purposes.

Has your mom said that she’s willing to pay the high costs for you to go to school here (up to $60k per year)? If not, what is your budget? As an int’l, most schools won’t give you any aid.

Well… are you looking for a school with lots of international students and diversity? One with a high percentage of Asians? You’ll probably be able to make friends at most schools, I don’t think there’s many where people would ignore you for being foreign.

california schools. There is a high percentage of Asian Americans because of the affirmative action ban.

MrInformed, so are you saying that in Caliornia, Asians are not held to higher standards when applying? That would be good news as I’m applying to 3 colleges in California for Computer Science.

Okay thank you. Im planning to do business actually  but still thinking…

I’m my specifically looking for schools with lots of Asians. I’m okay with any kinda school as long as the people are like friendly

My mom’s not in the states n I’m not a citizen. And yes she’s willing to pay n I’m not looking to get any financial aid :)

That thread has a list of colleges with the highest asian population but they’re talking about Asian Americans I believe, not international Asian students.

Was your mother a US citizen when you were born? If so, then you may have acquired US citizenship by descent even if you were born outside the US, depending on the amount of time she was present in the US:

Thank you  but I’m not specifically looking for a college with lots of Asians. Just colleges that are Asian friendly. Does bring a college with a lot of Asians mean it’s Asian friendly?

Good question - having alot of asian students at least will mean that if you want to hang with asians, there’s a population that you can connect with (but even within “asians,” groups selfsegregate into korean and chinese, etc), and perhaps that there is some sorts of asian-american or asian student groups. You might want to look at the % of international students too and what support a school has for international students. I’m thinking your question is more about how friendly a student population is - like we usually say midwesterners are very friendly while northerners are a bit more reserved. It’s a big generalization of course!! I can’t think of any campus that would not be asian or international friendly though.

I’d say UC-Berkeley would be a good choice

@j814wong He’s only referring to public schools. Just making sure that was clear since I have a feeling schools like Stanford might be included in that list of yours, ahah.

How selective of a school are you looking for? I think the vast majority of selective colleges in the US would be welcoming to international Asians, and have programs specifically aimed at helping international students acclimate to the school. The only thing I would watch out for are schools that draw from only a very local area, with few international or out-of-state students.
