So far, my choices are:
UCLA (Pre-Business Economics; probably try to minor in Accounting)
UCI (Business Information Management) + CHP (honors program)
Chapman (Business Administration)
Babson
Cal Poly SLO

Waiting:
Cal (Pre-Business; possibly going to try to double major in Public Health-health management)

I've read how it's "stupid" to major in Business as an undergrad, so this has made me concerned about majoring in it.. However, I don't really know what else I would major in.

I've recently been looking and comparing UCLA/UCI/Cal. In your opinion, where would it be best to go and why? Also taking in account which major would be easier to get a job after four years. (Please include a reason other than rankings).

Generally speaking, it IS pretty stupid to major in business. If u go to CSU or some crappy school like that then yea, it’s a waste. It’s better to major in econ, math, computer science, engineering or w/e so that u can specialize ur talent and be good at just one aspect of business. bc when u get ur MBA ur undergrad degree will just be overlooked. BUT…

…none of that applies if u get into a TOP 10 business program. if u get into upenn, haas, marshall, stern, mcintire etc…then its totally worth it. those programs are basically mini-MBA programs-sort of. by that, i mean that an undergrad degree from NYU or upenn for business is a hell of alot more attractive than an MBA from a no name school.

for u, i don’t know why u didn’t apply to USC. USC is ranked high (sort of) and is known for its network, which is what business is all about. i audited one course there and it was pretty much like community college level. but that really doesn’t matter bc so many rich ass kids go there that u will make tons of connections and have so much more opportunities when u graduate.

BUT THE BEST one for u would definitely be haas. u have to apply as a junior, so u may waste 2 yrs at cal and get rejected from haas. but u can still do econ if that is the case. i got accepted to ucla out of hs, but rejected from cal. so i decided to go to ccc for 2 yrs and apply to haas directly and usc too. for ucla’s biz econ (which has nothing to do with business really besides the accounting), i just have no interest in their curriculum so i applied as communications studies. haas is good, or it’s the best, bc the recruiting at haas is unbelievable. the alumnus is pretty small so there’s no “trojan network” or “bear network.” but all companies know about how great haas’s program is and u will have no trouble getting a job

Thanks for replying!

I didn’t really like USC that much, so I didn’t apply.

I’m thinking about going to Cal if I get accepted. I just got accepted to Stern! But it’s too much money haha (which is why I didn’t mention it earlier)

I would go:

UCLA (Pre-Business Economics; probably try to minor in Accounting)
Cal Poly SLO
UCI (Business Information Management) + CHP (honors program)
Chapman (Business Administration)

Babson - I don’t know much about Babson, but if you want to be an entrepreneur, it might be the best entrepreneur college in the world I heard.

Cal Poly SLO has a great business program. Out of all the UCs & Cal States, Cal Poly SLO is ranked 2nd in business by Business Week (Berk is 1st). Plus it’s really cheap and in a great college town in a gorgeous area.

UCI just opened their business program, so it might take awhile to get it’s reputation. It’s a great school though.

I would go UCLA.

If I got into Berkeley, then would you place it above UCLA?

Babson all the way!! You will end up with a business major, but the curriculum covers all aspects of business so that you’re prepared in all areas.

To address the above post: Babson has a good business program by normal standards, but it can’t hold a candle to a truly top-notch program like Berkeley at all. That said, it’s not a bad choice and not the worst of the ones you’re looking at.

Berkeley is the best school for business mentioned in this thread by far. It’s a level above anything else mentioned. A BBA from Berkeley will be worth more than an MBA from an average school.

I also agree that UCLA is your next best bet.

Would you place Berkeley above NYU-Stern? This is assuming I can convince my parents to pay for NYU >_>

Only in California and surrounding areas.

Berkeley’s Haas school is ranked third for undergrad business and NYU’s Stern school is ranked fifth, so it’s not like one is going to be significantly better than the other. NYU might be slightly better for the eastern half of the US, while Berkeley would be slightly better in the western half, but that’s mostly just for layman prestige because anyone who knows business programs will respect either one. If you have in-state tuition at Berkeley and get into Haas, it would be stupid to pay much more just to go to NYU.

That said, NYU does have a nice location, and if you’re okay with paying for your parents’ retirement after they blow their savings to send you there, it’s definitely a good school. Their finance program is ranked 1 spot ahead of Berkeley if you’re interested in that.

Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll go to Berkeley, if I can get in. I’m in state so it’s a lot cheaper. Plus it doesn’t hurt that I already know one of the Haas professors!

Why is Ross not on your list. Berkeley is the next best, way above UCLA. Especially if you are an international, I know a girl who finished UCLA’s business econs in 2 years (she was not a transfer).

Stern is not worth it. Just the location that’s all, but even so it;s not like all of you majoring in business at NYU’s going to end up in wallstreet. That;s just ludicrous.

My parents wouldn’t let me apply to Ross. I barely could convince them to let me apply to NYU and by the time that happened, Ross’ deadline had passed.

Should I still go to Berkeley given that I was offered Spring Admission? I sent in my $100 for the FPF (Fall extension program).
