I've been looking athe the major art schools (RISD, Pratt, Parsons, etc...) and some other colleges with art schools (UWashington, UGA, SUNY Buffalo), but I haven't really found a good judge of each of their metalwork programs. I was hoping for some feedback on these schools, and any others that you guys know of with good programs.

I was also wondering about when I apply to these colleges hoping to be a metalwork/jewelry major, how much of my portfolio should be jewelry and how much should be drawings, paintings, etc...(I ask because my drawing/painting skills are seriously not up to par for a school like RISD, even If i think my metalworking skills are.)

Thank you in advance

I don't know anything about the jewelry programs at Pratt or Parsons, but my son is a junior at RISD and I've met one of his friends who is a jewelry/metalsmithing major there. She absolutely loves the program. Jewelry is one of the smallest departments at RISD, and she has told me that there is lots of individual attention from the faculty and the group of students is very tight-knit. The facilities are excellent.

And you're right about the portfolio for RISD. They want to see a variety of works but they are primarily looking for evidence of the student's basic drawing skills (particularly in works drawn from real life) and eye for design (use of color, proportion, etc.). You should include a few of your very best jewelry examples (since that is your intended major) but you'll also need drawings and other examples of artistic work.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the tips...I guess I'll have to really work on my drawing skills, but I think I've got the design thing down.

kewlioto: Where did you end up attending school, and are you in fact in a jewelry and metalworking program? My son is interested in studying jewelry and metalworking, and we have looked at a few schools and are headed to look at more. We have seen RISD, New Paltz, and MassArt so far, and will be looking at Syracuse, RIT, Skidmore and Pratt – maybe Temple as well. Your input would be appreciated, if you’re still there!

I’m attending University of Michigan in the fall and pursuing a dual degree. The program was my main attraction to the school.
