I was just wondering what schools are good with public health as a major? In the future I want to work for the World Health Organization, and becpme an
International worker so I can go to Africa and educate people on AIDS.

Johns Hopkins...graduate program is outstanding. Don't know about undergrad.

Yale also has a great one, but it may be graduate only/

UM-CP. Excellente I say. JHU's is only grad I think. It might be undergrad but I've never been able to find any links to it. I'm pretty sure Yale's is only grad level too.

Tulane has a great program as well.

UNC-Chapel Hill. Grad level.

celebrian- JHU offers public health to undergrads. It's one of the most popular majors.

I'm shocked nobody's mentioned Emory...especially since the CDC is literally right next door! :)

You're right- silly me. I think I was thinking of another school where it was recently discontinued :D

That's really cool because I want to do the same thing, along with working against Female Genital Mutilation. I'm looking at Dual-Degree programs in social work and looking at Yale (You should really check out Epidemiology), Columbia, Michigan, UC-Berkeley, and possilbly WUSTL.

Thanks to everyone for the help. But some of the colleges people are giving me are really expensive. My parents can't afford anything greater than 28,000. So unless the school like gives alot of fiancial aid I can't go. To flutterbyhigh I first wanted to major in epidemilogy, but I really don't wan't to go into the whole science aspect. I just want to inspire people, and help them. I wanted to be like a person(I don't know what the occupation is called) that goes to different nations and talks to the heads of state about what they can do to better their country, for ex. going to the middle east and talking about the domestic violence women face. But I really want to help Africa, I have so much love for that continent considering I was born there, and lived in South Africa for 8years. The colleges that I am considering are: Florida State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Maryland/College Park, American University, Emory University(it is such a good school for health but so expensive), U of Washington, and Ohio State University(thats for saftey reasons, and to make my dad happy but I am defintely not going there). Any more colleges I could look at?

It sounds like you might want to look into Health Policy (for example, Duke offers it). Public Health involves science and usually at least a masters degree.

If cost is a factor, you might to want to consider Michigan.

Michigan has a wonderful School of Public Health, but they have grad programs only.

Yes, but can't the OP take public health-related courses at Michigan? Most people go on to earn an MPH, so I don't think a public health major is required, but I don't know if Michigan offers PH courses to undergrads.

Sounds like what you're really interested in is health education. Take a look at the description of the major from Indiana University. Is this what you really want?

In addition to the WHO are you considering the Peace Corps? A stint in the PC after obtaining your degree might help your career aspirations.

Any school in the 5-College Consortium Certificate Program in "Culture, Health, and Science".

Also very, very strong in African Studies:

http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/african/

University of Washington is traditionally strong in epidemiology, and is the national center for population health studies (in which I am involved.) There are opportunities for undergrads, though most of real work is only open to graduate students.

If you're out of state, Michigan is pretty freaking expensive...keep that much in mind. :p

Tufts has a "Community Health" major

also look into:
Hampshire C
Indiana U Bloomington
Rutgers C
U Cincinnati
U Mass Amherst
U Michigan Ann Arbor
UNC Chapel Hill

michigan has gotten ridiculous with their out of state tuition. It is absolutely insane to charge an out of stater the same amount that elite private schools charge. Sorry, to pay 40,000 for a public university is absolutely absurd, i don't care how good it is.

^I tend to agree. If 28,000 is the tops they can pay (and UMich isn't going to give you barely anything, if anything at all) it's just crazy.
