Don't know if this is the right place to post this...

I'm looking to buy a few books on colleges. There seem to be a ton out there, so I'd like to know what you people think are the best ones. Which are the ones that are actually helpful? How do the different guides differ? What are some good ones to get to get a range of information; it seems pointless to get several that are basically the same, even if they are all good!

--- USN&WR's "America's best colleges"--(newer version will come out in August)

-- -Kaplan Newsweek's "How to Get Into College" as basic guides to each college.

---Yale Daily News' "Insiders Guide to the Colleges" --doesn't have a write-up on each school.

---If there was a specific school my D was interested in, we'd buy the (oops--those orange covered books about each school--they edited me--PM me if you need more info) guide to the individual school.

A lot of public libraries have college guides, too. You can check them out and see which ones you might like to own. Some of them keep the most recent year as a reference book (that can't be checked out) but have the other years available for loan.

Our favorite guides: Students' Guide to Colleges (edited by Jordan Goldman and Colleen Buyers), Barron's Guide to the Most Competitive Colleges, Fiske guide, and the College ******* guides for individual schools (once you've narrowed down your top choices). Also recommended: Looking Beyond the Ivy League and Harvard Schmarvard.

I don't know why this site won't type the second word of the College ******* series, but for those who are interested: they can be purchased on Amazon or the college pr***er website.

I used "The Insider's Guide", but I also really like Fiske.

I liked those because they offered more than just numbers. they gave me an idea of what a place is like, and I liked that. And in some cases they were kind of amusing.

Our favorite is the Fiske guide. He writes 2-3 pgs about each school. So it's not just the stats, but gives an idea of the atmosphere on campus. I read the pages on a college I was very familiar with and I felt the desciption was very accurate, so it made me feel comfortable with the others. It was a good book for DS to look through to get an idea of colleges he might be interested in.

We also have the Princeton Review book, but I wouldn't buy it again. I would just look online at their site. The tuition rates were WAY out of date even though we had the current book.
