Best College I Can Get Into

What are my chances into just one of those reach schools. I am assuming that I have a 50% chance of getting into one of the four. I would like some input, please tell me if you think it should be higher or lower (percentage wise).

Reach: Cornell, Washington University in St. Louis, Carnegie Mellon, JHU
Match: U of R
Safety: SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Binghamton

SAT I:
1300-M(760) V(540)
SAT II:
Math 2C-690
Writing-520
Physics-640

I live in NY and am a US citizen. There is quite a discrepency between my SAT scores because my parents are both from India and so English was my second language. I spoke Telugu for the first six years of my life and am still very fluent. English is now my dominant language but I still can't think as fast as normal Americans. If I had enough time on SAT Verbal than I can easily get a 650 but with the time constraint I am never able to finish.

Class Rank 36/330
UW GPA-92%
Very difficult course load all four years
I am one of five students who are two years ahead in math
AP Calculus AB- Received a 5 on the Exam
AP Physics B- Received a 3 on the Exam

Senior Schedule:
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
AP English
AP Government
AP Economics
Calculus 2 at SUNY Brockport

Quick Glance at EC's
Varsity Tennis since Freshman and now am Captain
Mathletes since 8th grade and now am Vice President
Table Tennis Club
Math Tutor
Volunteer at Temple

I am very strong in math and decided to apply for a math major.
Very good Essay
Solid Teacher and Counselor Recs

wow dude u and me are so alike lol. i'm indian too and i'm like the EXACT same stats as you. but um, i'd say its a reach for those, i'm applying to washington too, and i figure since my stats are almost identical to yours it'd be a somewhat reach

Thanks for the input. I know the four were reaches but consider it holistically. My chance that i'll get into just one of the four.

It will depend on the essays and intangibles really. I think Cornell is probably quite a reach...The others, I don't know.

anyone else

Anyone think that I have a good chance to get into just one of those four schools.

Sorry, but I don't think your chances are that great at any of those 4 schools. Your SATs aren't high enough, and your SAT IIs dont make up for the difference. I hate to say it, but I'd give you maybe a 20% chance of getting into one of those schools.

Even with my math backround and keeping in mind English as a second language. Remember two of those schools dont even look at SAT II's, Washington and Mellon.

CMU and JHU for math is a good possibility. The schools are not going to give you much of a break as an ESL student. Too many Asians, particularly Indians blast that verbal SAT to the max with far fewer years than you have.

i agree with the poster who noted that it will be dependent on your intangibles. Elite Universities like Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell and WUSTL are not going to be terribly happy with your test scores, and its impossible to say how much the ESL status will compensate. One thing i will also reiterate is that some schools weigh certain aspects of the application more heavily than others. For example, Johns Hopkins puts a lot of emphasis on talent, ECs, the essays, recs and definately your coarseload, as well as the admissions committees sense of whether the student is after the "hopkins education". those kinds of odds and ends of the admissions review may work in your favor as well, depending on how solidly you represent yourself in the application as a whole

say I do that pretty well(the intangibles), like better than 75% of the applicants

i would say it'll come down to how much they decide to care about your low sat II scores. However, my advice to you would be to attach a letter to your application describing your unique language situation...i think it would help

one of five students two years ahead?
at my school theres 2 AP calculus bc class... atlesat 40 kids..
anyays, i think all ivy league is out of chance. to be honest, i dont think ur math isnt as good as u claim to be.. ur sat ii math is lower than even me. i got 700 math ii and 680 math on SAT I. anyways good luck.. verbal is a killer i understand.

Go Rochester! :)
I would say you definately have a good chance at Rochester. I was able to get in just fine with about the same math as you, a tiny bit higher english than you, but a lower class rank and gpa than you...
It's a great school... I am so excited to be going there next year. To me, I really don't think you can get as much attention at any other research school...

i got bigger discrepancies, 800M 540V
final sat I highest verbal+ math was 1400
at least you are applying for math, i am applying for chemistry with good math score and contest certificates :P
i am applying to cornell and st.louis. I don't think you got 50% at those top 4. i mean you can never say %, even with a 1500 it's hard to predict, who knows, the adcom might just have a bad day and come in drunk and stamps a reject on your app. anyway, i think you got somewhat chance, not the best, however, i wish u the best of luck and i think we are unique as less intelligent ppl. Maybe colleges want people like us to balance out the 175 IQ they got on campuses :)

Thanks for all your input and its pretty much fair to say that I agree with most of you guys. I have a very low chance. Now, I am just awaiting rejection. Oh by the way, the 690 in Math 2c is supposed to be a 790. And I was the school winner for AMC 10 and AMC 12.

whoa.. my SATs are exact same.. and im south asian too.... scaary

Don't worry about your scores for Hopkins. I applied ED and I have a 1290 on my SATs. I got a 660 on US History and French, and a 690 on Writing. I got in, despite not having their scores. You are taking challenging classes too, which is a very good thing. I say go for it, even if you aren't sure. Just make sure you have enough safeties that you feel comfortable going to. Good luck.

I think that you have a 50% chance with JHU and CMU, especially if you came across as being excited about those schools in the application process. Rochester and Binghamton also sound like good fits for you, and you should get in. Rochester even gives merit scholarships- that may be a possibility.

Thanks for all the comments. I am really satisfied with my college list and your comments really helped to put things in perspective.
