Best college mottos . . . . and go!

Go Blue!

(No Latin required)

Dartmouth: Vox clamantis in deserto = “A voice crying out in the wilderness”

@wis75 “Numen lumen” is Latin for “Divine light.”

I always thought Veritas was sort of stupid, but with recent events, the simplicity and basicness of it has grown on me.

@wis75 - According to uwalumni.com’s Ask Abe:

"The phrase “Numen Lumen,” developed as part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s seal and motto, is Latin and can be translated to mean, “God, our light.” But, according to a University Communications News Library article, the UW’s first chancellor, John Lathrop, who assisted in the creation of the motto, interpreted it to mean, “The divine within the universe, however manifested, is my light.”

On Wisconsin!

My personal favorite, of those I have come across: “Prodesse Quam Conspici” (accomplish without being conspicuous) - Miami University, Ohio.

I also like the not particularly ambitious tone of “Non Incatus Futuri” (not unmindful of the future) – Washington and Lee.

Finally, I appreciate the simplicity of “Lux Esto” (be light) – Kalamazoo College.

I like Lafayette’s simple “Cur non?” (Why not?)

@happy1 beat me to it. Not even my school, but I’ve always loved Penn’s motto.

Virginia Tech-

Ut Prosim -That I May Serve

Skidmore’s is, “Creative Thought Matters.”

USMA: Duty, Honor, Country.

I alway’s liked K’s Lux Esto also. Another from K is “The end of learning is gratious living.”

McGill:

Grandescunt Aucta Labore (By work, all things increase and grow)

Some websites star out part of that motto.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. “Knowledge is good”
Faber College

Then there’s my high school’s unofficial motto, “Function in disaster, finish in style”. The official one was the head scratching “Festina Lente” (Make haste slowly.)

Carnegie Mellon University- “My heart is in the work.” - Andrew Carnegie

Boston College - Αἰέν ἀριστεύειν - from the Illiad - “Ever to Excel”

“Veritas”? Who can handle it?!

Omnes spem relinquunt, qui huc intrasti

But then, I studied engineering…

Vita, Dulcedo, Spes (life, sweetness, hope) from UND. My college had a stupid one so I’m adopting this.

“Be nice until it’s time not to be nice” - Roadhouse

Love that!

Vita, Dulcedro, Spes
