Best College Mottos

What are your favorite college mottos?

My top includes Harvard: Veritas(although they changed it), Yale: Lux et Veritas, Stanford: Die Luft der Freiheit weht

Funny ones/Too long

Cornell : “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”

Evergreen State College: *Omnia Extares/i

UT Austin - “Hook 'em, Horns!” :)

My top includes Harvard: Veritas(although they changed it)…

Veritas is still Harvard’s motto.

I always joking confuse Harvard’s with “in vino veritas.” UCLA has some words in Royce Hall that confuse plenty of smart folks: “Education is learning to use the tools which the race has found indispensable.”

But really, this one would fit many: Venimus, Vidimus, Bibimus.
We came, We saw, We drank.

I’ve always liked Brown’s: In Deo Speramus “In God We Hope” - with the rising sun motif on the shield it always makes me feel positive and happier when I see it. Might be part of why Brown kids are always a little cheerier and less jaded than the other Ivies.

For cleverness, I appreciate UW-Madison’s Numen Lumen which is supposed to mean “God our Light”. It’s not idiomatic Latin at all, but it sounds cool.

It used to be Veritas, Christo Ecclesias or something like that (Harvard)

Oh yes I love Brown’s too!

Numen Lumen sounds great in my head

It used to be Veritas, Christo Ecclesias or something like that (Harvard)

Ah, you meant that they changed it to Veritas. Yes, quite some time ago.

Viriginia Tech’s : Ut Prosim - That I May Serve

Oh yeah, look at this old Harvard seal:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/The_Seal_of_Harvard_College_as_inscribed_on_the_top_of_the_Entrance_into_the_Main_Campus_of_Harvard_College..JPG

They had Veritas on the shield, like now, and “Christo et Ecclessiae” on a scroll around it - “truth for Christ and the Church”. The scroll apparently fell victim to Harvard going Unitarian, and Charles W. Eliot being determined to make it a scientific institution.

I’ve found Bowdoin’s motto to be unique: Ut Aquila Versus Coelum-As an eagle to the sky… I’m not quite sure what it means but it sounds majestic none the less.

IMO, I find Dartmouth’s a bit funny: Vox clamantis in deserto-A voice crying out in the wilderness.

If I’m correct, it’s quoted from the Bible but I’m interested as to why this phrase is their motto.
