Johns Hopkins University
George Washington University
University of Wisconsin- Madison (honors program)
Tufts University

obviously John Hopkins. Tufts is also nice. i mean, it’s Boston

Just to clarify, I am judging a school being “best” on academics.

JHU and Tufts are about equal, the other 2 are not quite on their level but very close and also equal.

Agree with TPL09. Also, Johns Hopkins probably is better known than is Tufts when it comes to having a nationwide reputation.

If, though, you’re planning on majoring in government or international relations, GWU may be the best place to go because it’s in D.C., and you’d also get the benefit of having professors and adjuncts with top recent gov’t experience, and you’d get more opportunities for internships, etc. in D.C. The D.C. connections can go a long way.

I think you could flip a coin between Hopkins and Tufts.

The answer depends on what you plan to study.

For example, Johns Hopkins and Wisconsin would be a much better choice for engineering than Tufts and GW.

Johns Hopkins wins academically overall.

It has a peer academic rating of 4.5 out of 5, on par with Columbia, UPenn, and Cornell.

Tufts is good too, but not as good as Hopkins.
And JHU’s name recognition is easily the best out of the four. by far.

Just check out the academic peer review… like Hope2Getrice said, on par with Cornell, UChicago (4.6?), and others.

I came from the Boston area, Tufts is a good school. It lives under the shadow of Harvard/MIT a lot but it is considered a good school. Well known for premed, study abroad programs, and IR. Really, academics are no match against Hopkins. seriously.

Hopkins has no academic rival between Philadelphia to Durham. (UPenn to Duke)
Those are the schools Hopkins is most similar to academically.

Tufts is not up there. Tufts is more like Brandeis…in some ways.

Academically, Wisconsin is significantly stronger than the other three. This is diluted by large class sizes and administrative red tape, so I’d have to agree with the others about Johns Hopkins.

Tufts and GWU are also fantastic universities, and it would make perfect sense to choose them over the others if one of them is a better fit. I’d choose Tufts, myself.

Johns Hopkins University.

JHU and Tufts are peers in my mind and better than the other two. But I see totally different students wanting each. Do you want a serious science dominated environment filled with pre meds or a top liberal arts type school? Ironically, as different as they are, they both do have terrific IR so if that’s what you want choose your environment.

Let’s not make this into a debate about prestige when it isn’t an issue.

That being said, I agree with hmom5’s assessment that Johns Hopkins and Tufts are academic peers, overall.

Hope2getrice is justifying his opinion using the USNWR Peer Assessment score, which itself is based on the biased and vacuous opinion of university presidents.

Phead128 is currently enrolled at JHU.

Hopkins and Tufts are pretty close, I’d say JHU has a slight edge though.

Johns Hopkins (15 US News) is the most elite institution rankings wise. Tufts (28 Us news) is much closer to Wisconsin (35) than it is to Hopkins and frankly I don’t think their faculty holds up to Wisconsin. I concur with IBclass06 on that. I would choose between those three depending upon financial aid and all things being equal where you want to live.

um, no offense to any Tufts lovers out there, but JHU is definitely >>>>>> Tufts academically in just about every single major you can think of including Humanities, social sciences, sciences, math, etc.

The caliber of professors at Hopkins is also far superior to that at Tufts, as well as the student body overall being a bit better. I think CCers are confused because Tufts’ student body does not lag too far behind Hopkins, but then again, Tufts doesn’t lag too far behind in student body from Cornell, UChicago, Northwestern, etc.

The Faculty at Hopkins, as well as the facilities and opportunities, are simply better and more highly regarded than those at Tufts.

Sorry to burst your bubbles. Hopkins is easily on par with Cornell, Duke, and Uchicago. The same cannot be said for Tufts, though it is somewhat closer now than it was 20-30 years ago.

kwu, if “biased” university presidents can’t be trusted to judge peer institutions, WHO THE HELL can? LMAO.

You must be joking me. You think the opinion of some pimple-faced teenager or depressed middle-aged working guy is >>>> the pinnacles and heads of academia? give me a break.

The USNWR Peer Review is the best judge of Academics. And on that list, Tufts isn’t near JHU.

University of Wisconsin- Madison

And the caliber of departments and professors at Wisconsin is far superior to that at Hopkins. Wisconsin blows Hopkins out of the water in nearly every field.

That’s not to say I think Wisconsin is the better undergraduate school, because I wouldn’t go that far. What I would say, is that pound for pound, Wisconsin easily comes out ahead.

Don’t you get tired of waving your JHU pom poms around in every thread? ;)
