Best College Rivalry

Define “ratings.” I compared national TV ratings, which consistently shows that more people are watching the national championship game in basketball than in football.

It’s hard to add up the full-season TV ratings for an entire sport, but you can get a rough estimate by following the money. Dollars go where the fans are. The SEC, for example, shows football dominating, producing about $92 million for the conference in 2008, v. about $41 million for basketball.

[SEC announces revenue, officers - NCAA.org](http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?key=/ncaa/ncaa/ncaa+news/ncaa+news+online/2009/division+i/sec+announces+revenue+officers_06_02_09_ncaa_news)

And that’s just conference revenues. By some estimates, the University of Florida alone generated over $100 million in football revenue in 2008—including its share of money that came through the conference, so some double-counting. No basketball program comes close.

Of course, the SEC is primarily a football conference. But most of the big sports revenue-generating progrmas are also football powerhouses. Here’s an estimate of the top revenue producers from Street & Smith’s.

These are all football schools. Not a basketball-dominant school among them.

Phonyreal98, are you referring to the one national championship game? Last January, 23 million people watched the Oklahoma vs Florida game, and that’s a little lower than the last 4 years, when 25+ million people watched the BCS championship game. The last few years, fewer than 20 million people have been watching the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Overall, I think it is impossible to determine which sport is more popular or followed. I would say it is fair to surmise that both sports are equally popular.

Close, but no cigar!

MSU 26 : UM 20 (OT)

Paul Bunyan Trophy ‘stays’ in E. Lansing!!! :P

^^^Wow two years in a row. Congrats! Enjoy it while you can, 'cause it’s going to end next year…;-)

^^^ yeah, thanks!! Both MSU & TOSU have the tendency to throw away close ones…So, my fingers were crossed the entire game even though MSU had control mostly throughout the game. That said, I do see Forcier getting better next year…

That MSU-UM game looked like quite a show. I’m bummed that it wasn’t on TV down here.

^^^^I hate the Big Ten Network. In the past this certainly would have been at least on ESPN or ESPN2.

Great game, congrats to Sparty on the win. But in a year or two, Forcier is going to be a legit Heisman candidate. This Michigan team is fun to watch.

The Spartans earned their win last night. I am proud of Tate, but MSU definitely was the better team on the field.

If college football is so much bigger than college basketball, then how come the top basketball programs like Duke and UNC get so much more coverage on ESPN and other sports networks than Michigan and Ohio state do?

This year, ONLY 3 DUKE BASKETBALL GAMES of about 35-40 aren’t being covered by ESPN, CBS or FOX. I would imagine UNC gets a similar amount of TV coverage.

UMich/OSU simply don’t get the same amount of media attention. Why you ask? Because there are about 20 other football programs/rivalries that are considered prominent as well…In college bball, there is only one: Duke/UNC. It is clearly the best college sports rivalry out there because of its dominance over other rivalries in the sport, proximity of schools and success of the programs.

^^^More like there aren’t enough true rivalries in bb compared to football. Just because there aren’t as many, doesn’t mean the bb rivalry is better. Which just goes to prove once again why college football is king!

No, that would be the media feeding you crap and telling you what to care about.

It’s obviously because USNWR, ESPN, heaven, and hell are all biased against Michigan, lesdiablesbleus.

Come on, catch up to these things!

^^^Finally, someone gets it!

Hard to believe this has gone on 195 posts and nobody’s suggested Kansas- Missouri.
Obviously no cc’ers from the heartland now. (understandable since they overwhelmingly go to their state schools and don’t need CC much for that).

Admittedly, I didn’t read the whole thread(only read to page 4) but I’m gonna take a guess and say no one mentioned Maryland v. Duke(for basketball).

While, it is by no means a UNC v. Duke or Mich v. OSU, UMD v. Duke is still one of the best college basketball rivalries in the country. Williams vs. Krzyzewski, Red vs. Blue, North vs. South, Public vs. Private, Cole Field House vs. Cameron Indoor Stadium. I still think this is one of the best plays in college basketball history.
^^^^

I think UMD students and fans may consider Duke to be a rival, but I doubt many Dookies feel the same way about UMD. Duke’s rival in basketball is UNC. Other schools may be tough, but nothing comes close to the Tobacco Road rivalry in basketball.

^^^

I hate when people say that. Yes, I know Tobacco Road is so much bigger than Maryland. However, that doesn’t detract from the fact that UMD/Duke is still a great rivalry.

Note: Yes, I am just using this thread as an excuse to talk about how amazing Maryland is. Always gotta rep my Terps whenever possible.

Whatever, you hate Duke, that’s fine with me.

But I’d have to say that THIS is the greatest image in college basketball- :)
