Best College Rivalry

how bout penn state vs. ohio state(or michigan when they decide to put themselves back together)

collegebound, Michigan is 9-1 vs PSU in the last 10 meetings. But I agree that over time, this could turn out to be a significant rivalry.

And although it is still early, I am pretty sure last year’s 3-9 season was a hiccup due to a complete change in coaching staff, a 180 degree shift in offensive and defensive philosophy and an entirely starting 11 on offense. Michigan should finish with an 8-4 or even better record this year.

and a completely embarassing loss to appalachian state, which was scheduled as an “easy win”.

even as a californian i recognize Michigan-OSU as the biggest rivalry ever.

…"and a completely embarassing loss to appalachian state, which was scheduled as an “easy win”.

Yes, but collegebound, that same year, Michigan won 9 games, including wins vs then #10 PSU and then #9 Florida at the Capital One Bowl. And Michigan played the last two regular season games (vs Wisconsin and OSU) without its starting QB and its star RB.

lol im just playing

edit: top big ten teams are usually the best rivalries

Hmm… I once read an article stating that The Game (TOSU vs. Michigan) it’s actually an extension of Harvard-Yale Football Rivalry - The oldest continuing rivalry since 1875, also called “The Game”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard-Yale_football_games_(The_Game)

Ohio Stadium was modeled after Havard Stadium, whereas Michigan Stadium was modeled after Yale Bowl. TOSU’s school color Scarlet and Gray (a slight shade variation of Crimson & White) chosen by the student committee was approved by the 1st President - Edward Orton Sr. who was an avid Harvard alum & sportsman. The landmark Orton Hall on TOSU campus was named after him. On the other hand, Yale Blue was used as one of the references for establishing the official Michgan Blue in 1912. [What colors are maize and blue?](http://www.ns.umich.edu/MT/96/Fall96/mta13f96.html)

There were other similarities I read which I can’t recall now…=.="

p.s. Over 100 posts now!! lol Time for bed…

University of Richmond versus William & Mary for the oldest football rivalry in the South.

All of the Ohio alumni that I know get really excited and throw parties for every bowl game even though they live 2 states over, so it appears to me that they get really into every game!

“Michigan also compete with Mich State so for “that state up North” the OSU game is not as big a deal.”

This is, sadly, true. The local media is utterly unconcerned with Ohio State, it’s not going to bring them any viewers, so Michigan-MSU is hyped up as the rivalry. Most Michigan fans in the area go along with this as it’s much more important that they get bragging rights over their Spartan fan co-worker than beating a school from another state. I think understanding the rivalry is tied to being an alum or a very diehard Michigan fan (ie. not someone who says "lions suck this year, better wear the Michigan hat) and those two groups are minorities.

However, Ohio is not 100% devoted to the Buckeyes. I’d guess 20-25% of Ohioans are Michigan fans, and the animosity between those groups is greater than in any other rivalry in the nation.

This is just nuts! What planet are you from? For Michigan athletes, coaches, students, alums, and fans, Ohio State is THE game and THE rivalry. Has been for years. Will be as long as anyone can anticipate. For Michigan, Michigan State is a distant third after OSU then Notre Dame. Yes, there’s lots of media hype in the state about Michigan v. Michigan State, but that’s mainly because Michigan State regards Michigan is their main rival by far, and fan interest embraces just about everyone in the state—whereas MSU fans, roughly half the state, don’t give a hoot about Michigan-Ohio State. But that doesn’t make the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry bigger than Michigan-Ohio State in the eyes of Michigan athletes, coaches, students, alums, and fans.

And it annoys Sparty to no end that Michigan doesn’t even respect MSU enough to make it Michigan’s top rivalry—or for that matter, even one of the top two.

There are lots of asymmetrical rivalries like this. Wisconsin and Minnesota both regard Michigan as one of their top 2 or 3 rivals. To Michigan, these are just Big Ten also-rans, sometimes with good teams but pretty far down the list of season priorities.

We’re actually agreeing. The difference in our arguments is that I’m saying ~30% of Michigan fans in Michigan are just people who own hats and want to brag to their Sparty coworkers on Mondays.

Texas-Texas A&M
Texas-Oklahoma
Texas-Texas Tech
ALL ABOUT UT!!!

“That is exactly why it isn’t the best rivalry.”

If this is a prerequisite for “best” rivalry, then Duke/UNC certainly won’t win the award. Duke is ranked among the top 10 universities in the country; UNC is not even ranked among the top 25. Duke is ranked among the top 15 universities in the world; UNC is not even ranked among the top 100.

Wow, great answer from a Dookie. Your school is pathetic, always has been, always will be. UNC is the total package: top-tier academics, athletics, and social life. Dook has one out of the three.

There is more to a college than USNWR rankings (even though UNC comes in at a very respectable #28). Most people tend to realize this once they graduate high school, but Dookies like yourself realize that you are outmatched in pretty much every single aspect of the college experience, so you have nothing else to cling to.

Pathetic.

“Erm, the basketball court? Hell, Michigan chokes so much in hockey, I wouldn’t be surprised if tOSU beat them, as bad as they are.”

Michigan has nine, count them nine NCAA hockey championships, the most of any D1 school.

Wow, great answer from a Tar Hole suffering from Jan Brady Syndrome.

“Your school is pathetic, always has been, always will be.”

If Duke is “pathetic”, despite being ranked among the top 10 universities in the country and top 15 in the world, what the ***** do you call UNC, a school that’s not ranked among the top 25 universities in the country and top 100 universities in the world?!

Top-tier academics: Stats and rankings prove otherwise…

Athletics: Sure, if you like having coaches who have relations with and sexually harass their players…

Social life: I don’t find NASCAR family reunions and interacting with a school whose population is comprised of 86% in-state students too appealing…

But hey, I’ll give you one thing: that email that the professor wrote, in response to the ad placed around campus detailing his home address, was mad funny! I seriously lmao. No way he should have resigned over it! I don’t think he was being malicious or trying to threaten anybody…

I call it the best school in this state. Also known as a Public Ivy, a Top Public, and, according to Kiplinger, the #1 best value in the nation.

Um, no, they don’t. UNC is a top 5 public university, one of the best schools in this country by nearly every measure. Keep dreaming though.

Lacrosse. Enough said.

How does it feel to constantly be on the losing end of the rivalry? What were you doing last spring when we were celebrating another NCAA basketball national championship? Hosting a viewing party for the latest edition of USNWR?

Cute. NASCAR fans go to State. And most people would agree that UNC’s social life is much better than Duke’s. Heck, the four Dukies that I met at a frat party at UNC last night even said so themselves.

I actually agree with you here. He felt threatened, and said that he was perfectly capable of defending himself. Nothing wrong there. No idea what this world is coming to.

I’m a college hockey fan; I’m well are of that, but Michigan has been choking big time the last few years. And as I said, tOSU wins on the basketball court too.
