Best College Rivalry

Harvard vs Yale

“Syracuse has the Powell brothers and 10 titles. 'Nuff said.”

Mazel tov! You managed to steal the exact words out of my mouth.
But let’s be serious, within miles from the SU campus you can smell LAX championship. Sorry Phead, your JHU LAX > Syracuse LAX has just been severely discounted.

Michigan stadium will be over 108k next year when renovations are done. the big house will rule once again! Glad to see that TUOS has another big time rivalry finally. Maybe they will obsess a bit less about Michigan. :-)

PLEASE . I NEED YOUR HELP .
I´m 16 student in europe , intrested in investment banking - trading .
looking for continuing my studies at a good college in USA OR CANADA .

I don’t think any buckeye fan is obsessed over Michigan these days if ever…

Michigan has been on the declining slope in terms of academic ranking. So far as USNWR is concerned, it is ranked outside of top-25 for the 2nd stright year. Whereas TOSU continues to strive and ranked among the top ‘up-and-coming’ institutions by USNWR, on the verge to crack the top-50 and more.

Football Rivalry wise, “7-1” under HC Tressel, that’s all I have to say!
G’luck with R2, hope blue fans’ $money$ will all be worth it at the end!

At TOSU, students look ahead not dwell in the past!! Forward thinking!! And most importantly, we are not known as the Arrogant Axxes (oops, Ann Arbor I meant  like the school up north!

“Pride Comes Before The Fall”

Go Bucks!! :)

Sparkeye, Michigan is not on the decline in the USNWR rankings, although it is not on the rise either. Michigan will be ranked between #21 and #30 for a long time. The USNWR simply will not allow a public university to crack the top 20. But in terms of academics, Michigan has not budged. Its peer assessment score has been pretty constant for the last 30 years (anywhere between #7 and #13 in the nation), and its rankings in Business, Engineering and other fields has been pretty even for quite some time.

This said, tOSU is definitely on the rise, which is a good thing. I love the fact that the Big 10 has top universities such as Michigan, Northwestern, UIUC and Wisconsin.

In terms of football, the Buckeyes have dominated the 2000s, but Michigan dominated the 1990s. It will always be cyclical. I see OSU dominating for the next couple of years, but after that, watch out!

Either way, the Michigan vs OSU rivalry is awesome.

Alex, thanks for the input!! A classy blue fan indeed!!!

I fully embrace and recongnize the ‘potentials’ and ‘traditions’ of UM and respect the school both in academic and in sports as do most TOSU alumni (not necessary the fans!!) deep down in their hearts. After all, not only am I also a Spartan from the state of Michigan, but was down in Columbus during the end of Cooper era and received my 2nd diploma in '02 when TOSU won the national title.

So, Respect THE Rivalry & Go Big Ten!!! :)

*typo: enemy…:P

College football is become more egalitarian and the Big 11 is fading in terms of football prestige. It is in danger of falling out of the top 5 conferences as the SEC, Big 12, ACC, and Pac 10 are firmly entrenched in front of it. The Big East looks good as does the Mountain West this year…

The first NCAA lacrosse tournament was in 1971. However, college lacrosse was played long before that. The US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association started declaring [national champions](United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association - Wikipedia) in 1881; the USILA champion earned the [Wingate Memorial Trophy](Wingate Memorial Trophy - Wikipedia) after 1934.

Both JHU and Syracuse earned USILA national championships in the pre-NCAA days. In terms of all-time national championships (or co-championships) since 1881:

JHU: 44
Syracuse: 14

Syracuse would have 15, except that their 1990 national championship was subsequently vacated by the NCAA.

The JHU number is actually 62.5, if you count one player inducted with dual JHU/UVa affiliations

One of the most impressive JHU lacrosse stats is the fact that JHU has participated in every NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament since 1972. That’s 38 consecutive post-season tournaments.

It’s easier to crawl up from the bottom, then to stay up at the top. Michigan is still way ahead of TUOS academically. I can’t ever see that changing.

“Pride Comes Before The Fall”

The thirteenth football game for the tUOS almost every year. :-)

“I don’t think any buckeye fan is obsessed over Michigan these days if ever…”

Are you sure you went to the tUOS? ;-)

"College football is become more egalitarian and the Big 11 is fading in terms of football prestige.
Willmingtonwave, your analysis is way off. Only one conference is currently head and shoulders over the rest, and that’s the SEC. The other 3 major conferences (Big 10, Big XII and Pac 10) are roughly equal. And if you cannot acknowledge the significance of the Michigan vs OSU rivalry, you are in denial. It makes a stronger argument for the greatest rivalry in all of sport than any other.

I would accept it is comparable to UNC and Duke, but not the Yankees and the Red Sox.

The Yankees and Red Sox? You mean that new one?

I can’t believe I am listening to a Wolverine fan lecturing me about the post-season bowl games…@_@" If I recall, michigan couldn’t get pass Toledo AT HOME last year… and which bowl game did the blue fans go last year? Didn’t the buckeyes also play Toledo this past weekend at Browns Stadium?? Beating Michigan from buckeyes’ standpoint is the way it should be since we always ranked higher by Nov at least for the last 5 years or so. On the other hand, IF michigan ever beat the buckeyes again, that would probabily be an upset!!

Although I do respect Michigan’s academic reputation in general, for undergrad education, Michigan is not even 2nd best public these days and certainly no Ivies. Even though I can’t expect a few jumps like USC in the past decade or so for TOSU (USC used to rank similar to TOSU in the late 80s & early 90s), but when TOSU cracks top-50 in the next few years, I see not much difference if UM still ranked between 25~35 regardless of the PA score. So far as I am concerned, 25~50 on USNWR is not a top league. If you ask me, only consistantly ranked top-10 schools ‘may’ entitled to use the word “never”.

LOL. Michigan, among public institutions, is academically only exceeded by Berkeley in this country. Just look at the PA scores at USNWR. The same one’s where tUOS is not even at a 4.0 rating. Not even close. When the great public universities in this country are discussed, NO ONE EVER mentions tUOS. Well no one except those of course in the state of Ohio who are stuck going there. Btw, tell me the last time tUOS has beaten an SEC team in a bowl game? Let me give you a hint, it’s 0-forever. Michigan is a top school, they “probabily” will remain one for the foreseeable future, and will remain well ahead of tUOS in the public eye.

'If you ask me, only consistantly ranked top-10 schools ‘may’ entitled to use the word “never”."

No comment needed here.

Whether Michigan can maintain its status as the front runners of nation’s top public universities in the next decade or so lies very much in tune with Detroit’s future economical prosperity not just in Ann Arbor and not just for UM but also MSU (That’s why I was ecstatic and relief when State won the FRIB contract with DOE). There was a famous economist (whose name I could no longer recall…) from UM said this to my class when he visited my high school in Livonia (a stone away from…Novi for those you don’t know :P) that “if ever one day the city of Detroit go into depression and not survive, all the satellite cities including Ann Arbor will drop dead the next day when Detroit collapse!” That is also the reason why I was willing to bet my $ on TOSU rising to the top in the next few decades for the reason that Columbus not only recently topped Cleveland as the largest city in the state of Ohio, but it is continue to grow in all sectors and as one of the very few midwest cities that have sustained the recent recession with minimal setbacks. Under the current strong leadership of both the city officials and the University staffs, I can actually envision TOSU to advance and emerge in similar fashion as UM did, in which the school benefited greatly from the rising automotive industry in the early 1900s thereby establish and solidify its elite status into the 21th century.

^^^^So what you’re saying is that you left Michigan to go to tUOS because you thought you had a brighter future in Ohio? So I assume you were accepted into the University of Michigan and refused admission because you knew that in the next 50-100 years your future school might rank as high. You were so sure of this that you paid OOS tuition to attend a school that is more comparable to the one in E. Lansing than Ann Arbor. Please stop me if anything I’m saying here makes any sense. I am glad however that you lived a “stone throw” away from Novi and that you were “ecstatic and relief” that MSU got won that contract.

^^^^I’ve actually typed up a page long reply for you. But, halfway through, I figured that there is really no need for me to disclose more of my personal info on public forum. However, I will save my reply and someday if I feel that I’ve known you good enough, I might just PM you with my information if you care to know. For now, know that I was an international student. Go Bucks!!! :)
