Best College Visit Yet

My son is admitted at SLU / Parks college. Interested in EE.

Do you feel your son got the support structure in place (faculty advisors, etc) to help him be successful?

ALso, I gather coops and Internships are pretty important esp for placement. Was SLU helpful in landing these?

And is there any free time when you’re NOTstudying? Was he mostly with others in Engineering?

I visited SLU last fall with my son. By far this has been our best visit. The campus is beautiful, the students and priests we passed by were friendly and as nice as could be, the tour was very thorough and the presentation by the admissions staff was excellent. We also had a great feeling about the school and the campus when we visited. We visited Loyola this weekend and he was more enamored with it than I was. I really liked Loyola, but SLU may have already won my heart! Although both schools would be about a 6 hour drive for us, maybe I just look forward more to a drive to the south (SLU) rather than north (Chicago) - especially in the winter.

He’s only a junior so we still have time…

B6104, My son did aviation science at Parks and did the professional pilot concentration. He liked the faculty a lot for the most part , he still stays in touch with a couple of them. All his friends in aviation at Parks seemed to get internships , I don’t have knowlege about the engineering internships though, I’ll ask him when I see him. Yes, it seemed most of his guy friends were all from Parks because he didn’t go Greek. They were all friends with girls from other majors but the Parks people seemed to hang together.

To follow up, yes the school was helpful with the professional develpment and contacts networking. He also had ideas of his own that he asked them to help pursue.

Silverlady, you may never see this, but if you do, would you mind sharing your Ds stats for the Presidential Scholarship? Also, do you know any additional stats about those who receive it? All it says online is that anyone with over a 1320 qualifies.

I’ve been out of town, so I haven’t checked this forum for a while. My daughter started SLU in the fall of 2003. She had a 33 ACT, 1420 SAT, 4.6 GPA, tied for 1st in her class. She had great EC’s.

When we went to the Presidential Weekend, we were given a sheet with the average stats of all of the student invited for the Prez scholarship weekends. All of her stats were higher than the average, but not by much. I think that the average ACT was a 31 or 32, SAT was about 1400, GPA was about 4.35 (weighted). I might be wrong on some of them, but not by much. I do remember that DD was a bit higher than the averages on all of the stats.

This was 6 1/2 years ago. They now invite 200 for the interviews, I think. We were told that the interviews was all that counted that weekend. Once invited, all of the students were considered equal.

It was a great weekend. She stayed with a Prez scholar, went to several receptions, and had several interviews. The school could not have been nicer. All of the invited students were guarenteed some merit scholarship, even if they didn’t win the Presidential.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Silverlady! My DD will be applying for this scholarship and I was wondering how her stats stacked up. Do you remember offhand when the scholarship weekend is?

Just to follow-up. My DD and I finally made it to SLU this weekend and it was great! I have to agreee with previous posters that the campus was beautiful. Lots of fountains, flowers and green spaces. Kids seemed friendly. We ate at the cafeteria and the food was typical and she would have no problem surviving. She loved all the outside food vendors on campus that you can use a meal “swipe” at. The tour was great. We had a guide that was, as my DD said, “everything I want to be”- a Medical scholar, an Honors Student, and a Presidential Scholar. She was really great about giving my DD valuable info about volunteering in the area. All the kids seem really involved on campus and in the community. All someone had to say was “medical mission trip” and my kid was smiling. Keeping our fingers crossed for a Presidential Scholarship!

Reading through these old posts as son has been accepted to SLU and is really excited about visiting there. I saw a mention above of something called a Billiken Bus In. What is that? Is that an accepted students day kind of thing? Would love to take advantage of that if it falls at a good time in the school year.

Want to thank all of you for your posts. Some of your kids are there now, and would love to hear how they’re doing. Maybe some pointers for things to make sure we see on a tour, dorms, hotels, restaurants. Son will hopefully be spending the next four years up there!
