Best colleges for aspiring video game artist?

Hi everyone, thanks for the informative discussions.

My son is a talented artist who has maintained a very good GPA in a reputable high school. His goal is to become a video game artist, and is adamant about not getting into the programing side of things.

I've found many colleges that offer degrees in Video Game Design, etc., but would like to find the best colleges for an aspiring video game artist.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Honestly, there are plenty of colleges who advertise their game design programs, but speaking as someone who knows many people employed in upper level positions at studios such as BioWare, Vivendi Universal, and the former Troika Games, I can tell you that they'd much rather hire out intelligent students from classical media arts programs and computer science programs. In the case of video game artists or conceptual artists, you may not even need a degree related to electronic media (although knowledge of and experience in digital art will be a great asset).

Some programs, most notable the entirity of [url="<a href="http://www.digipen.edu%22%5DDigiPen%5B/url">http://www.digipen.edu"]DigiPen[/url</a>] are advertising careers in game design, but the truth is, it's much better if you graduate from a program in a more reputable institute, even if it does not have a game design slant.

Hope I helped, feel free to PM me or e-mail me if you have any questions.

Rhode Island School Of Design?

I have indeed heard good things about RISD. A lot of the companies are also California-based and hire out a significant fraction of their students from Cal Berkeley, UCLA, and UCI.

...that's great to hear about RISD. My son will be attending their precollege program this summer. It's the first year they are offering Game Design as a "major".
