Hey everybody, I'm looking for a college that's a good match for me with a strong program in biology that offers a concentration in marine biology. I would also like to go to a college that offers study abroad programs too. I'm open to pretty much all options to where it is and class size and such. My only requirment is that i learn a lot and have fun doing it lol
Thanks so much =)

I don’t know about “strength”, but I know Barry University in southern Florida has marine biology and so does Hawaii Pacific. You could probably just do a search in google and come up with something you like.

Check out Rollins College in Florida. It is in Winter Park outside Orlando. My son chose this school for marine biology. Part of the curriculum is a field study requirement at a marine field station which is open to many areas. My son will probably go to the Duke Marine lab but other options are open as well. There is a strong study abroad program and even opportunities to go for one week programs. Before school began S went to Costa Rica as part of an entering freshmen offering.

Just a thought… pretty much all schools have biology and offer study abroad options. Marine bio is more of a masters/phd, while bio would be the undergrad–being near the ocean would probably help-- but remember, most kids switch majors more than a few times.
Dont pick a school for one thing-- make sure its an overall fit first.

thanks everybody for your thoughts… (:

UC San Diego. Strong biology program, and a marine biology program that I think is pretty good.

Will be tough to get in though. Even more so if you’re OOS.

I’ve heard really good things about University of Miami’s marine science program, it’s a double major biology/marine science so it gives you the general biology, plus you get the experience of undergrad research and marine biology courses.

UC Santa Cruz has a very good marine bio program and the Long Marine Lab and research center is affiliated with the school. UCSC also offers a marine bio specific study abroad research quarter in Costa Rica.

UC Davis has a marine bio concentration and is affiliated with the Bodega Bay Marine Lab. Undergrads can do a research quarter there, but that’s still in California.

All UCs have a very extensive EAP (education abroad program). Of note for you would be ties with universities in Australia and South America. I had a friend who was a marine bio major who did a year abroad at the University of Queensland and got to do research down there.

I second UCSD. We don’t have a specific marine bio per se but our biology department is fantastic. The Ecology, Evolution and Behavior major allows for a lot of marine bio classes because the Scripps Insitute of Oceanography is UCSD-affiliated.
