Best colleges for communication in New England

Hi! I’m a transfer student (rising junior) hoping to stay around New England, specifically MA or Boston area, but I’m open to school suggestions elsewhere in the country. I want to study communications, or media and culture studies, with a minor in sociology or marketing.

Northeastern is my dream school but they’re not accepting applications for the spring :frowning: Does anyone have any knowledge or suggestions of schools with strong comms programs and/or high career placement? My gpa is 3.9. If anyone has any thoughts or experience with these schools too, I’d love to hear them!

in MA:
-Suffolk University
-Emerson College
-Bentley University
-Simmons University
-Stonehill College
-UMass
-I have a feeling BU would be too big and intense for me
in RI:
-Bryant University
-Providence College
in NY:
-Hofstra University

Thanks so much for reading and for your help.

Where are you in college now? Is there not a major there that will get you to your career goal?

Can you afford to be full pay at the colleges you listed?

Hi, thanks for your response. I’m at UVM, they do have a Public Communication major. I’m not sure about full pay but for the most part, yes!

Why don’t you stay at UVM.

Are you an OOS student at UVM? Are you instate for the Massachusetts public universities on your list?

I’m not sure why you want to transfer?

I live in MA so I’m out of state for UVM, and I just didn’t have a very good experience connecting with the school.

Are you willing to share more information about what you disliked about your time at UVM ?

This info. could help with making recommendations for other schools which might be a better fit for you.

P.S. Not sure if this will help, but American University in Wash DC might be of interest. Very attractive campus, attractive students, and great internship / externship opportunities.

I visited AU recently & was pleasantly surprised regarding the location, students, & internship / externship opportunities. Students appeared to be intelligent, attractive, and upper middle class /upper class from what I saw.

The Forbes Guide To Colleges has a lot of positive comments regarding AU.

Sure thing, I love Burlington, but UVM’s campus was too big for me and isolated being a couple hours away from home. The academics also didn’t really hit the right chord with me compared to schools with more of a humanities focus than a science focus.

Other than that it’s a really great school! But it’s not a good fit for me personally. I hope this helps

Thanks! American is the only school on my list outside of the NE region. I’ll have to check it out.

In my post above, I suggested American University which is located in a very attractive area of Wash DC. Should be considered if you are serious about a career in communications.

While Northwestern University & USC tend to be leaders in this area, ASU (Arizona State university) has amazing offerings in communications. Of course, ASU is neither small nor in New England, but it does have an honors college & the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & the school of communications are strong. The journalism school is outstanding.

The College of Charleston offers an interesting location.

Based on my short visit to American University in Wash DC, I encourage you to investigate whether or not this school is of interest to you. I was very favorably impressed. Cozy, friendly, & serious are some adjectives that describe my impression. Lots of beauty all around.

This is good to know, thank you! I’m not interested so much in journalism or production as much as I am in media theory, although I also want to learn practical skills. Is College of Charleston known for communications too?

I cannot comment on the College of Charleston beyond the location & the honors college. Beautiful & charming city.

At the risk of being overly repetitive, I encourage you to research American University.

Ohio University in Athens Ohio has a good communications college. It’s a small college town in southeastern Ohio, so not close to home for you. But might be worth checking out.

I forgot to add, I’d love to stick around Boston post-graduation, although I’m not sure if school location has that great of an influence on career outcomes. I’ll definitely look into American - it actually seems like it checks off a lot of boxes for me.

Have you considered Syracuse?

I saw they have a good communication school, but I doubt I’d fit in with the party culture that it’s famous for (or from what I’ve heard)

It also seems like you are looking for something smaller and less spread out.

Staying in your area…Syracuse, Emerson, Ithaca.

Do you know anything cost of American? Their net price calculator was the most generic I’ve ever seen, and we are not full pay.

Lots of partial merit & need based aid.

American University also offers partial scholarship awards to transfer students.

American isn’t known to be that generous with need or merit based aid. See here: 75% of need met on average, and 21% of students with no need receive merit. Release Domestic Financial Aid 2021 - Google Sheets
