best colleges for economics?

Well other than Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Yale, Princeton... (obviously)

... the next group would be Oxbridge, Columbia, LSE, Berkeley, Stanford

... and then Northwestern, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin, NYU and a bunch of other schools that are also excellent. Lots to choose from for economics.

nauru - really off topic, but what is amsterdam like? how does it compare to the U.S. in terms of culture? I'm really interested in studying abroad there.

I'm usually not one to support Columbia, but I think it's complete nonsense to say Columbia is a notch below Penn in economics. On what possible grounds? Give me any tangible evidence that Penn is better. To me, there's nothing that you can do coming out of Penn that you can't also do coming out of Columbia. It's this type of creation of meaningless distinctions that propagates further anxiety around this process that is misleading and unnecessary.

I quite agree Gellino, there is no difference in the quality of the econ departments at say Chicago or MIT and Cornell and Brown. Any of the top Econ programs will be equally good. But there are small distinctions and the OP was seeking them out specifically. I was merely responding to that request. Personally, and this is pretty evident from many of my posts, I seldom differentiate when I discuss top programs or top universities.

nodnard and tennisgirl,

Northwestern's grad program has been ranked higher than Columbia's consistently at least for the past decade. However, Columbia did had quite a bit of success in recruiting some big name profs in the last few years and they may just as good as Northwestern now. Anyway, the difference in faculty strength is very tiny, if any.

As far as undergrad programs go, it's hard to say which ones are better than the others among all the top schools. But the fact that Northwestern College Fed Challenge team has just won the 3rd consecutive national title is a strong indicator that their undergrad program is among the very best in the nation.

Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, Princeton

Berkeley, Northwestern, Penn, Yale

Columbia, Michigan, NYU

...etc

u guys how is rice university for economics?

[MMSS, Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, Northwestern University](http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/)

Totally unique to Northwestern. All of the classes are taught by profs, and the program is an excellent springboard to business OR academia: just take a look at the current recruiters and list of past internships. Also meets all of the prereqs for <a href=“Certificate Program for Undergraduates”>http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/certificate/index.htm</a>, ALSO unique to Northwestern. Can’t go wrong with MMSS :).

They went on a shopping spree.

Penn’s econ wins out over Columbia’s because Penn’s can leverage the Wharton School. Columbia Business School isn’t exactly shabby, but Wharton it ain’t.

It’s amazing Penn can hold its own on Columbia given that you’d think Columbia could get any professor by saying “you get to live in NYC”

^Oh cummon Ilovebagels, you can’t possibly believe that an econ program is bolstered because of the universities business school, perhaps a business school can be bolstered by a strong econ program (MIT and Chicago come to mind) but wharton doesn’t do a thing to improve Penn Econ department. Columbia Business school is easily a top 10 school and gives the Columbia econ department any foreseeable benefit that wharton gives Penn’s.

When it comes to Econ please take a look at the faculty at Columbia and Penn and tell me if you truly believe Penn’s is superior, I would find that very hard to believe. Columbia econ 10 years ago was worse than Penn’s but it has revolutionized itself in 10 years, and is pushing top 5 today. The shopping spree has paid off handsomely and the current econ faculty rivals the top 5 (H,P,S,M,chicago)
