Hi. There was another thread may be similar to this one about the Best Colleges for Political Science/Government and Economics, but I think that they were mostly talking about JD/MBA. Which I'm not really interested in, I'm interested in Political Science, but not to get into law school.

Some good ones are Georgetown, George Washington, American, Claremont McKenna and Ohio State.

Hi. I found on the internet what I think to be an answer to my question. Here, I'll quote it: "
Top 20 Departments of Political Science - according to Google
November 2, 2007 · 2 Comments
Paul Caron recently posted some interesting rankings of law schools via a Google ranking system. In other words, its the rank order of law schools according their relative listing placement when you conduct a Google search for law school. Apparently, Googles ranking algorithm is top secret (and Paul has some fun with gullible readers on this point), but who are we to question Googles wisdom in such matters?

In any event, here are the Top 20 Departments of Political Science:

Hi. I found on the internet an article mentioning U.S. News's listing the top two, the only public school to make U.S. News's top political science schools, 123rd, and a study put together by the London School of Economics and Political Science ranking number one for small scale political science schools. Here, I'll quote it: "Top Political Science Colleges

Unfortunately, most sources that rank colleges and universities, however objective their study, turn their rankings into a profit-making publication, such as U.S. News and World Report (www.usnews.com). On the other hand, studies done by non-profits are generally conducted by colleges or academic institutions themselves, like the study ranking political science programs conducted by the London School of Economics and Political Science (www.lse.ac.uk). Since these are the sources we have to work with, one should always question the criteria a source uses to rank a school, and use one's own judgment as well. Consider criteria such as the average class size, the cost of tuition, demographic make-up, the number of instructors with Ph.D.s, the number of tenure-track faculty, and the number of grants coming in from outside sources.

But when we turn to published rankings for political science colleges, U.S. News's list places Harvard at the top with a 5.0 out of 5.0 rating. U.S. News describes the school as a large private school of 6,715 students in an urban setting that practices some of the most selective admissions policies. Behind Harvard is Stanford, a school of a very similar description and a political science program rating of 4.9 out of 5.0. The only public school to make U.S. News's top political science schools is the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Described as an extra large public university of 25,555 students in an urban setting and very selective admissions criteria, the University of Michigan rated a 4.8 out of 5.0 for political science.

The apparent trouble with the rankings produced by U.S. News is that large and well-renowned schools have the upper hand. When it comes to small college, Bowdoin College's program in Government and Legal Studies ranks number one for small scale political science schools. That is according to a study put together by the London School of Economics and Political Science. When thrown in with the rest of the large and extra large schools, Bowdoin College only ranks 123 and would likely never be noticed otherwise. This demonstrates the importance of looking at diverse listings. "

So, here's a recap of the last post...

Michigan state beats michigan by 15 places in their political science department global ranking. Muahahahaha.

sorry, i just had to point that out :D

what about Georgetown ?

Georgetown is awesome for international affairs and its School of Foreign Service, but less prestigious for general polisci or government. Those departments are not as strong as some other colleges', comparatively.

Msu's number 12 that's awesome GO SPARTANS !

While it's true that Georgetown's polisci department may not be as elite as some other schools, it's location makes a Georgetown political science education unbeatable IMO.

Politics happen everywhere. Maybe an internship with a local advocacy group
(or your senator's local office, or your governor's office, or your state representative) isn't as glitzy as one with your senator's DC office, but to act as if you can only obtain that experience in DC shows that you don't know a lot about the facts of finding a political internship.

If you like LACs, I second the Claremonts. Also try looking at Occidental.

Although I am biased, I would say that Claremont Mckenna has the strongest government department of LACs considering they have 27 profs in their department and most colleges have around 12. This increases the quality of education and course offerings at the college while maintaining the close-knit interaction in the classroom. If you get tired of CMC you can always walk across the street to Pomona's politics dept...

CMC > Bowdoin
