What universities (not conservatories) in the United States are among the best places to pursue composition at the Graduate level? I assume that the Ivies are good, as are places like Indiana, Rice, UC Berkeley, etc... but what else?

What schools are known to place an emphasis on giving out teaching assistantships or fellowships to their grad students?

Kevin1, look into Yale SOM, an excellent program and full tuition is covered for those attending The competition is at an extremely high level, as are the TA/GA openings.

Harvard also is a highly recognized grad comp programs.

I am looking for graduate schools for composition. I think I want to explore grad schools within a university, not a stand alone conservatory–unless it is closely associated with a university, I live in the North East, so I don’t want to go too far if possible. Also which programs are more likely to give scholarships or TA jobs so that I don’t have to pay much tuition.

GW07626 - I read your thread about your daughter looking for a grad school. I think this may be something she’ll have to research herself. Picking a grad school for composition will have to do with picking an aesthetic - as well as mentors. Most of the Ivies have graduate programs in composition. All the big state schools. It’s different than looking for undergrad departments. She could go abroad as well. Lots of choices. But easily narrowed down by her likes and dislikes - what she wants to do in grad school - what she’s looking for.
