Best Computer Engineering for the Buck

I am wondering if anyone here knows about a school with a really good computer engineering program for the buck? In my home state of Tenn, you can go to UT for 15 thousand a year. I am concerned that with my current core gpa of a 3.23 I might not make the cut of being admitted into their program, they want me to have either a 27 or 28 in the math section of the ACT. ( I took the sat on oct 10, and am awaiting scores) So bassicly, I need a good school to fall back on with a good computer engineering program. If I have anything good going for me it is this, I am expecting anywere between a 28-31 ACT equivelnt CR/M, and I have a very strong list of EC's and awards. I even placed 9th in the nation in the FBLA cyber security comeptetion. So a school that puts lots of weight on extra curriculars would be great.

University of Virginia at Wise (located in Southwestern VA -so it’s closer to Tenn) has a software engineering program and a few other computer science majors. You might want to take a look at it.

We got some great info from a Dr. Andrew Watkins at Mississippi State University when son expressed interest in the computer science and engineering department.

Many people from the Memphis area do attend there, so you’d probably have a good chance at acceptance.

Their OOS tuition is very low, and the school size is great, only about 11K.

Definitely worth checking out.

Engineering schools are going to put a greate deal of weight on SAT scores and grades. The program is tough, they want to know you can make it thru. All the ECs in the world aren’t going to do anybody a bit of good if they can’t pass the classes. The engineering schools that care about ECs like MIT do so because they have to choose between highly qualified applicants.

If you can’t get into your state schools (which is where value is to be found) directly, an alternative path is a CC for 2 years and then transfer. Its also worth having your folks fill out one of the FAFSA estimators online to see what they are expected to give. If it is small, some people have found that a private college can actually be a better deal financially than the state school.
